Chapter 2 - The Ghost In The Family Portrait

The delivery suite descended into a suffocating, unnatural quiet where the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor sounded like an executioner’s drum.

I pulled the flannel blanket tighter around my baby, staring at the legendary surgeon as if he had lost his sanity right before my eyes.

“Your son? Logan never had a family,” I said, my voice hardening despite the exhaustion trembling through my limbs.

“He told me he grew up in state foster homes across Pennsylvania. He had no childhood photographs, no holiday calls, and no high school diploma on his wall.”

Dr. Wright pulled a metal stool close to my bedside, sitting down heavily with his shoulders slumped in utter defeat.

“Logan lied to you because living as a ghost was the only way he believed he could protect innocent people from the Wright family curse.”

He reached into the inner breast pocket of his white lab coat, his liver-spotted fingers fumbling with a worn leather wallet.

With agonizing slowness, he pulled out a small, creased photograph coated in glossy plastic and held it inches from my face.

The breath caught violently in my throat.

Standing on the manicured lawn of a sprawling brick estate was a younger, vibrant version of Logan Wright.

He wore an expensive navy blazer, laughing brightly with his arm thrown casually over the shoulder of an identical twin brother.

Standing behind the twin boys were Dr. Robert Wright and an elegant, cold-eyed woman draped in diamonds and pearl silk.

There was no mistaking the striking, angular jawline, the unruly chestnut curls, or the fierce violet-gray eyes of the young man in the photo.

It was the exact same face that had kissed my forehead every morning for two years in our dilapidated basement apartment.

“This was taken the summer before Logan turned twenty-two,” Dr. Wright explained, his thumb tracing the image of his lost son.

“My family controls the majority shares of the Wright Pharmaceutical Group, an empire built on clinical patents and private hospital chains across the East Coast.”

I shook my head violently, trying to push away the surreal nightmare descending upon my exhausted mind.

“If Logan came from unimaginable generational wealth, why did he work sixty hours a week as a third-shift line mechanic?”

“Because seven years ago, Logan discovered that the clinical trials funding our family's foundation were forged with deadly negligence.”

The doctor’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, his eyes darting toward the closed wooden door of the delivery room.

“My late wife, Eleanor Wright, prioritized corporate preservation and legacy above all basic human ethics, including the lives of our own blood.”

“What does any of that corporate greed have to do with Logan abandoning his pregnant girlfriend on a stormy night?” I demanded, tears of outrage burning my eyes.

“When Eleanor discovered that Logan was gathering internal lab documents to present to federal regulators, she orchestrated his destruction.”

Dr. Wright closed his eyes, the guilt etched deeply into every line on his face.

“She utilized our private security apparatus to stage an offshore boating accident off the coast of Rhode Island to silence him before the press caught wind.”

My heart skipped a terrifying beat as I stared down at my sleeping baby’s peaceful, milk-pale cheeks.

“His own mother tried to murder him?”

“Eleanor did not want him dead; she wanted him declared legally deceased and committed indefinitely to a private psychiatric retreat in Vermont.”

The doctor wiped his eyes with a handkerchief, his breathing ragged and uneven.

“Logan broke out of that facility six years ago, completely cutting all ties to his former identity, his wealth, and his real name.”

“If he was free and hiding under an assumed background, why did he run away from me the second I needed him most?”

Dr. Wright reached forward and gently lifted my baby’s left hand, turning the tiny palm upward to reveal the soft skin of the wrist.

There, perfectly visible under the harsh delivery lights, was a faint, crescent-shaped birthmark identical to the mark beneath the baby's collarbone.

“Because Eleanor didn’t stop looking for him when he escaped that sanitarium, Joanna.”

The doctor leaned in until I could smell the antiseptic soap and coffee on his breath.

“My wife died eighteen months ago from sudden heart failure, but she left her entire fortune and the corporate board to Logan's identical twin, Julian.”

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end.

“Julian?”

“Julian possesses all of Eleanor's cold, calculating cruelty, but none of Logan's conscience or mercy,” Dr. Wright whispered darkly.

“Two weeks before Logan disappeared from your apartment, Julian’s private investigators tracked Logan’s social security alias to your neighborhood.”

A cold sweat broke out across my forehead as the horrifying pieces began snapping into a jagged, terrifying puzzle.

“Logan didn't run away because he didn't want a child,” I realized aloud, my voice breaking into a ragged sob.

“He left to draw Julian's hired hunters away from that apartment building so they wouldn't target me and our unborn baby.”

“Julian’s primary motive has always been the legal inheritance clause Eleanor wrote into her final testament,” the doctor explained grimly.

“The family trust explicitly dictates that seventy percent of the pharmaceutical conglomerate reverts automatically to the first legitimate biological child carrying the Wright bloodline.”

I gasped, pulling my baby closer to my chest until his small head rested directly over my racing heart.

“Julian has no children?”

“Julian’s marriage is a barren business merger, and his doctors confirmed years ago that he cannot biologically father an heir.”

Dr. Wright stared directly into my eyes with an intensity that chilled me to the marrow of my bones.

“Your newborn son, Joanna, is currently the rightful legal owner of a nine-hundred-million-dollar fortune.”

“And the moment Julian discovers this birth certificate exists, he will stop at nothing to eliminate both of you from the face of this earth.”
