Chapter 2 - Footsteps in the Ceiling

The first time it happened, Elena was dusting the second-floor library.

She assumed the noise came from outside.

A child's laugh.

Brief.

Faint.

Innocent.

It was gone before she could even step to the window to look.

She told herself it was just the wind.

Or maybe a gardener’s child playing near the gates.

The second time happened during a massive thunderstorm.

Rain was lashing against the massive windows.

Thunder shook the foundations of the estate.

But the sound didn't come from outside.

It drifted down through the ceiling above the third-floor hallway.

A distinct, clear laugh.

Then, footsteps.

Small, hurried footsteps.

Running across the floorboards right above her head.

Elena stopped walking.

Her heart pounded violently against her ribs.

The west wing was supposed to be completely empty.

The attic access was supposed to be padlocked.

So who was running up there?

Days passed in a blur of anxiety.

Elena tried to convince herself she was imagining things.

Then she found the physical proof.

A silver dinner tray.

It was hidden carefully behind a dark service staircase.

It had been recently used.

The crumbs were still fresh.

But it wasn't a normal meal.

The food portions were cut into tiny, bite-sized pieces.

Portions meant for a child.

Elena felt cold.

Very, very cold.

One night, after everyone had gone to sleep, she made her move.

She couldn't ignore the mystery any longer.

She followed the faint sounds.

Up three flights of steep, silent stairs.

Past the heavily locked doors of the west wing.

Toward a narrow, dusty corridor she had never noticed before.

At the very end stood an old, heavy wooden door.

It was locked.

Bolted from the outside.

And cleverly hidden behind a massive, decorative tapestry.

From the other side came a soft, melodic voice.

Humming.

A slow, sad lullaby.

Elena's hands trembled as she reached out.

Slowly, she pressed her ear against the cold wood.

Then she heard it clearly.

A little girl's voice.

“Hello?”

Elena jumped back as if she had been burned.

Silence followed.

A long, terrifying silence.

Then the child spoke again, her voice pressing against the crack in the door.

“Are you the new one?”

The blood drained completely from Elena's face.

She could barely draw breath into her lungs.

“Who are you?” Elena whispered, terrified someone would hear.

A pause.

A shaky breath from the other side.

Then:

“My name is Isabella.”

Elena froze.

Her mind stopped working.

Isabella.

The exact same name engraved in gold beneath the giant portrait downstairs.

The exact same child the entire world believed had died a decade ago.

Suddenly, a sound shattered the quiet.

Footsteps echoed from the floor below.

Heavy.

Fast.

Rhythmic.

Someone was coming up the secret stairs.

Elena turned around blindly.

Her heart nearly stopped beating.

Valentina's voice floated upward through the suffocating darkness.

Cold.

Sharp as broken glass.

Dangerous.

“Elena?”

The housekeeper backed away from the locked door.

Inside the room, the little girl immediately began crying.

And in that terrifying moment, Elena realized something horrifying.

The billionaire's daughter wasn't dead.

She had been locked away in a cage.

Hidden from the world for ten agonizing years.

And the elegant, cruel woman climbing those stairs would do absolutely anything to keep her buried.
