Chapter 2 - The Scream That Blew Open the Door to a Dark Past

The shrill sound of my mother and sister screaming pierced the sterile quiet of the intensive care unit, drawing immediate attention from the nurses stationed at the central desk. Detective Miller stepped forward instantly, his broad frame blocking the doorway as my mother stumbled backward against the wall, her face draining of all color. Megan stood beside her, her hands trembling as she pointed a shaky finger at me, her eyes wide with a frantic mix of guilt and unbridled fury.

"You weren't supposed to be here yet!" Megan shrieked, her voice cracking under the intense scrutiny of the medical staff and the detective. "You were supposed to be stuck in Denver!"

"Why would my presence change how you treat my son?" I demanded, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper as I stepped out of the ICU room and into the corridor. The raw grief inside me was rapidly morphing into a cold, lethal rage. "What did you do to him? Why did you laugh when I called you last night?"

My mother’s composure crumbled completely, her facade of cold detachment replaced by a frantic, defensive panic that looked entirely unhinged. She grabbed Megan’s arm, her knuckles turning white, muttering something incoherent about things getting out of hand and how I brought this upon myself by abandoning my responsibilities. Detective Miller didn't waste a second, pulling out his badge and stepping directly into their personal space.

"Mrs. Bennett, Megan, I am Detective Miller with the Chicago Police Department," he announced, his voice authoritative and razor-sharp. "You both need to come with me to the precinct right now for questioning regarding the near-fatal injuries sustained by a minor in your care."

"You can't arrest us!" Megan yelled, her voice pitching up in panic as she tried to back away toward the elevators. "We didn't do anything wrong! He fell! Kids fall all the time!"

"You just said a second ago that he 'got what he deserved' over the phone to his mother," I cut in, my eyes locking onto Megan with a fury that made her flinch. "And the surgeon already confirmed these injuries match blunt force trauma and defensive bruising, not a simple playground fall. Don't you dare lie about it now."

Detective Miller gestured down the hall, and two uniformed officers materialized seemingly out of nowhere, blocking the exit routes. Realizing they were trapped, my mother straightened her posture, her eyes hardening back into that familiar, venomous glare that had haunted my entire childhood. She looked at me not with remorse, but with a deep, unsettling contempt that sent a shiver down my spine.

"You always ruin everything, Claire," my mother spat bitterly, refusing to look at the police officers cuffing her wrists. "You think you're so smart with your corporate career and your independent life, but you left him right where he belonged. You invited this."

As the police led them away in handcuffs, their desperate justifications echoing off the hospital walls, I felt a sickening realization begin to take root. My mother wasn't just talking about a momentary lapse in judgment or an accidental injury; she was speaking of a deliberate, calculated act of malice rooted in something much deeper and darker than I had ever imagined.

I turned back toward the glass window, watching the steady rhythm of the heart monitor keep my son tethered to this world. Detective Miller lingered behind for a moment, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder before speaking quietly.

"We’re going to tear their lives apart, Claire, starting with a warrant to search your mother's house," he promised. "Whatever led up to last night, we are going to find out the truth."
