Chapter 7 - The Collapse

By the time I reached the city, the FBI, the State Attorney General, and the local police department were waiting in a secure boardroom I had arranged. Clara was there, too, flanked by the two off-duty cops. She looked terrified but resolute.

I slapped the encrypted hard drive onto the mahogany table. "Gentlemen," I said, looking at the assembled agents and prosecutors. "I present to you the destruction of Beckett Hale."

For the next four hours, we played the files. The seasoned FBI agents grew pale as they traced the money laundering network. The local police recoiled in disgust as they listened to the audio of Beckett torturing his wife. The evidence was irrefutable, completely destroying the narrative that Clara was the mastermind or mentally unstable.

"We move now," the lead FBI agent ordered, slamming his notebook shut. "Before he realizes the backup data is gone. Simultaneous raids on his office, his penthouse, and the charity headquarters."

At 2:00 p.m. on a Tuesday, the perfect world of Beckett Hale collapsed on live television.

Clara and I watched from the safety of the AG's office as news choppers circled Hale Holdings. We watched as federal agents marched out of the glass building carrying boxes of documents. And then, we watched as Beckett Hale—the charming philanthropist, the perfect husband—was dragged out of his building in handcuffs.

He looked disheveled, frantic, his perfect hair out of place. He was screaming at the cameras, demanding his lawyer, claiming he was framed. The facade had completely shattered.

"He looks small," Clara whispered, stepping closer to the television screen.

"He was always small, Clara," I said, standing beside her and putting an arm around her shoulders. "Monsters like him rely on shadows and silence to look big. You turn on the light, and they're nothing but pathetic little men."

Beckett was denied bail. The combination of domestic terrorism charges, massive financial fraud, and his ties to the Bratva made him an extreme flight risk. Even worse for him, the Russian syndicate, realizing he had kept meticulous records of their transactions, immediately put a bounty on his head. For his own safety, he was placed in solitary confinement. The king of the castle was now locked in a concrete box.

Over the next few weeks, the full extent of his crimes became public knowledge. His assets were seized. The charity was restructured under state supervision to actually help children. David Vance took a plea deal and entered Witness Protection. And Clara’s name was completely cleared of any wrongdoing.

The nightmare was officially over. But the healing was just beginning.
