Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Mansion

The peace in the mansion was shattered three days later.

I was walking down the grand staircase when I heard raised voices coming from Damien's study.

I paused, pressing myself against the marble balustrade.

"You're becoming weak, Damien!" It was Vincenzo's voice.

How did he get past the guards?

"You hide in this house with a waitress while our enemies encroach on the docks," Vincenzo continued. "The family is whispering. They say the great Damien Moretti has lost his nerve since the twins got sick."

"My sons are recovering," Damien's voice was dangerously quiet. "And my business is none of your concern, Vincenzo."

"It is my concern when you let an outsider raise the next generation of our bloodline!"

I peaked around the corner. Vincenzo was pacing, his face red with fake outrage.

"She's a spy, Damien," Vincenzo sneered. "Who do you think poisoned the babies at the restaurant? It was her. She created the problem so she could play the savior and infiltrate your house."

My blood ran cold.

He was twisting the narrative. He was setting me up.

Damien laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "You're grasping at straws, cousin."

"Am I? Have you checked her room? Have you looked through her things?"

Vincenzo slammed his hand on the desk. "I'm telling you, she's working for the Barone family."

I didn't wait to hear more.

I ran silently back upstairs to my bedroom, my heart pounding.

If Vincenzo was accusing me, he must have planted something.

I tore through my room. The closet, the bathroom, my suitcase.

Underneath my mattress, my fingers brushed against a small, velvet pouch.

I pulled it out and opened it.

Inside were three vials of white powder and a stack of banded hundred-dollar bills.

Tears blurred my vision. Vincenzo's moles inside the house had planted it.

Before I could hide it, the bedroom door opened.

Damien stood there, his eyes locking onto the vials in my trembling hands.
