Chapter 6 - Checkmate

The Rossi family estate in the Hamptons was imposing, built of gray stone and surrounded by manicured gardens.

It was the site of the annual family board meeting, followed by a formal dinner.

When Nico and I walked into the grand dining room hand-in-hand, the silence was absolute.

Valentina sat at one end of the massive mahogany table.

Liam and Amber sat on the right side, both looking utterly miserable.

Amber's blonde hair was perfectly styled, but the dark circles under her eyes betrayed her exhaustion.

Liam wouldn't even look up from his empty plate.

"Nico," Valentina said, her voice dripping with ice. "I cannot believe you brought her here. To a private family dinner."

Nico pulled out a chair for me, helping me sit before taking his place at the head of the table.

"Luna is not just a guest, Valentina. She is my partner. And she will be treated with respect."

Amber scoffed loudly, the sound echoing in the tense room.

"Partner?" Amber sneered, unable to help herself. "Please. We all know what this is. She's just using you to get back at Liam because she wasn't enough for him."

The room went deathly still.

Nico didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to.

"Amber," Nico said softly, in a tone that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

"In the short time you have been associated with my family, you have proven yourself to be greedy, manipulative, and entirely devoid of class."

Amber's mouth dropped open.

"You seduced my son in his girlfriend’s bed, foolishly believing it would secure you a place in this family. Instead, it only secured your ruin."

Nico signaled to his assistant, who was standing quietly in the corner.

The assistant stepped forward and placed a thick manila folder in front of Liam.

"What is this?" Liam asked, his voice shaking.

"That is a severance agreement," Nico said calmly.

"Effective immediately, you are stepping down from your Vice President role at Rossi Enterprises. You will receive a standard severance package, and your trust fund will be placed in a blind trust that you cannot access until you are forty."

"Dad! You can't do this!" Liam yelled, standing up.

"I just did," Nico replied coldly. "You have coasted on my name for too long. It is time you learn how the real world works. You have thirty days to vacate the penthouse."

Amber turned entirely pale, grabbing Liam's arm.

"Liam, tell him he can't do this! We have the wedding to plan!"

Liam looked at Amber, and for the first time, I saw genuine disgust in his eyes.

"There is no wedding, Amber," Liam snapped, pulling his arm away from her. "We're done. I lost everything because of you."

"Because of me?!" Amber shrieked, her carefully crafted persona completely crumbling. "You came to me!"

As they began to tear each other apart right there in the dining room, Nico stood up and offered me his hand.

"I believe we've lost our appetite for dinner," he said smoothly.

I took his hand, standing tall, feeling completely liberated from the shadows of my past.

"I think you're right," I smiled.

We walked out of the dining room, leaving the chaos of Liam and Amber's toxic implosion behind us.

As we stepped out onto the terrace, the cool evening breeze off the ocean washed over us.

The stars were shining brightly, and for the first time in my life, everything felt perfectly aligned.

"Are you okay?" Nico asked, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and pulling me against his chest.

I leaned back into his embrace, watching the waves crash against the shore.

"I've never been better."

They thought humiliating me was the end of my story.

They had no idea it was just the prologue.

And as Nico kissed the side of my neck, sealing our future together, I knew one thing for certain.

The best revenge isn't just making them regret what they lost.

It's finding something infinitely better, and never looking back.
