Chapter 4 - The Squeeze

Victor Vale liked to think of himself as a king. But kings only rule as long as the treasury is full.

On Tuesday morning, the first domino fell.

Victor was in his corner office, sipping aged scotch, when his Chief Financial Officer burst through the double doors, sweating through his custom shirt.

"Sir. The Apex Equity loan," the CFO gasped. "They’ve called it in."

Victor frowned, setting down his glass. "That's impossible. We have a ten-year term."

"They invoked a breach of contract. Clause 4B. Executive misconduct causing reputational damage. They're demanding immediate repayment of the $300 million principle, plus interest. We have forty-eight hours."

Victor laughed, a harsh, dismissive bark. "Misconduct? From what? Adrian's little scuffle at the baby shower? That hasn't even hit the press yet. Tell Apex to back off, or we'll sue."

"Sir, you don't understand. Apex holds the liens on everything. The new high-rises. The hotel chain. The mansion. If we don't pay, they seize it all."

The blood drained from Victor's face. "Then get a bridge loan! Call our partners at Chase!"

"I did," the CFO whispered. "Chase declined. So did Goldman. So did Morgan Stanley. Sir... our stock dropped 15% this morning. Someone is aggressively shorting us. The market thinks we're toxic."

While Victor's world collapsed, Adrian was oblivious. He was busy at a high-end jewelry store with Sienna.

"The three-carat diamond, babe," Adrian said, sliding a massive, gaudy ring onto Sienna's finger. "Only the best for the mother of my true heir."

Sienna giggled, admiring the sparkle. "It's perfect, Adrian. Your parents are going to love me at the gala."

Adrian handed his black Amex card to the clerk. He felt invincible. He had disposed of his boring, plain wife. He had the divorce papers signed. He was free.

The clerk ran the card. The machine beeped angrily.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Vale," the clerk murmured, looking embarrassed. "The card is declined."

"Try it again," Adrian snapped. "It has no limit."

The clerk tried again. "Declined, sir. It says... account frozen."

Adrian yanked his phone from his pocket, furiously dialing his banker. When the banker finally answered, the voice was cold.

"Mr. Vale. All lines of credit have been suspended pending the corporate margin calls. Have a good day."

Adrian stood in the jewelry store, the illusion of his wealth cracking for the very first time. He looked at Sienna, who was glaring at the clerk, unaware that the empire she had married into was currently burning to the ground.
