Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

On Wednesday, my children went back to school.

I made sure to pack their favorite lunches, slipping a small note into each box reminding them how much I loved them. Ethan hugged me a little tighter than usual before getting on the bus. He was still worried. He still thought our world was crashing down.

I had to show him how to rebuild it.

I finally drove to the Bennett Office Supply headquarters at 2:00 PM. I didn't sneak in. I walked right through the front doors, holding my company laptop.

The receptionist, a young girl named Chloe, looked up and gasped. "Claire! I... they said you weren't allowed past the lobby."

"Don't worry, Chloe. I'm just here to drop this off," I smiled warmly at her. "How's your mother's hip recovery going?"

Chloe blinked, surprised I remembered. "Oh, she's much better. Thank you."

Suddenly, the glass doors to the executive suite swung open. Vanessa marched out, wearing a two-thousand-dollar suit I now knew the company had paid for. Dad was right behind her, looking stern.

"I see you finally decided to cooperate," Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms. "Did you bring the signed NDA?"

"I'm not signing anything, Vanessa," I said smoothly, placing the laptop on Chloe's desk. "Here is the hardware. Completely wiped and reset to factory settings, as per standard security protocols."

Dad frowned, stepping forward. "Claire, stop being stubborn. You need that severance money. You have two kids to feed."

He actually used my kids against me again. To my face.

I looked at the man who had raised me. I looked at the man who had watched his grandchildren sit at a table with no food, just to teach me a lesson about obedience.

"My kids are eating fine, Dad," I said quietly. "In fact, they'll never have to worry about begging for scraps at your table again."

"Don't be dramatic," Dad snapped. "You brought this on yourself. You never respected the hierarchy of this family. Vanessa is the older sister; she is the natural successor."

"Vanessa is a parasite," I replied, not raising my voice.

Vanessa's face went red. "Security! Get her out of here!"

"There's no need," I said, turning toward the door. "But I would suggest you check your email, Vanessa. The corporate inbox. Not your personal one."

I walked out of the building into the bright afternoon sun. As I got into my car, I could see through the lobby windows. Vanessa was looking at her phone.

Even from the parking lot, I could see all the color drain from her face.

It was the formal notice from Marcus Thorne's hospital network. They were terminating their contract with Bennett Office Supply, citing a "loss of key personnel."

Over the next 48 hours, the dominos fell exactly as I knew they would. Two more massive accounts canceled their orders. Without those invoices, Bennett couldn't meet its payroll for the warehouse staff.

My new company, Apex Logistics, was officially registered by Friday. I hired Marisol as my VP of Operations, doubling the salary Vanessa used to pay her.

We set up a temporary office in my dining room, armed with laptops, whiteboards, and a relentless drive.

While my kids did their homework at the kitchen table, they watched their mother build an empire from scratch. There were no more empty plates in my house.
