Chapter 5 - The Long Road to Healing

The physical recovery took months. The bruises faded from purple to sickly yellow, eventually leaving behind faint, permanent shadows on my skin.

My voice returned slowly, dropping a register, carrying a raspy edge that would always remind me of that night on the kitchen floor.

But the physical healing was nothing compared to the psychological excavation.

I had to move out of the house we shared. I couldn't look at the kitchen island without seeing the bank statements. I couldn't look at the floor without remembering the feeling of oxygen being violently stolen from my lungs.

I rented a small, secure apartment on the other side of the city. A place with minimalist, clean lines. No clutter. No memories.

I spent my days with physical therapists, trauma counselors, and the District Attorney.

Evan’s defense team was aggressive. They hired expensive PR firms to leak stories to the press, trying to frame the incident as a tragic altercation between a stressed husband and a financially paranoid, unstable wife.

They tried to argue the tape was doctored. They tried to subpoena my past medical records, looking for any history of anxiety or depression to weaponize against me.

But the evidence was insurmountable.

Dr. Shah's medical report was bulletproof. The deep tissue damage, the petechiae in my eyes—science proved that Evan had applied lethal pressure for an extended period. It wasn't a sudden shove; it was a sustained, deliberate attempt to kill.

And then there was the money.

The District Attorney realized that the assault charge was only half the story. To prove motive, they needed to unravel the financial web.

That was when I met Sarah, a forensic accountant assigned to the DA’s office. She didn't look at me with pity. She looked at me with professional determination.

"They thought they were smart," Sarah told me one afternoon, spreading spreadsheets across my dining table. "But greedy people always leave a paper trail. We just have to follow the breadcrumbs."

I poured us both a cup of coffee. "Show me everything."
