Chapter 6 - The Unveiling

I pressed the button. The massive screen behind me flickered to life.

There was no audio, but the high-definition security footage didn't need any. The image of the back hallway at The Hawthorne Estate filled the room, ten feet tall and inescapable.

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom as the guests saw Ellen, small and vulnerable, holding out the velvet box.

At the VIP table, Michael’s face drained of all color. He shot up from his chair. "Dad! Stop this! What are you doing?!"

"Sit down, Michael," I barked into the microphone, my voice echoing like thunder.

On screen, Cassandra viciously slapped the box away. The diamonds on her fingers caught the light even in the grainy video. The society wives in the audience gasped aloud. Whispers erupted like a wildfire.

"Robert, turn that off!" Cassandra shrieked, panic breaking her carefully curated voice.

I didn't move. I forced them, and everyone else, to watch.

The footage continued. Michael grabbing Ellen’s arm. Cassandra screaming in her face. And then, the shove.

When my son violently pushed his mother into the wall, a woman in the second row actually screamed. The thud of Ellen hitting the floor seemed to echo in the minds of everyone present. They watched, horrified, as Cassandra kicked the shoe and the newlyweds walked away, leaving an injured, weeping woman on the floor.

The video looped, starting over again.

"That box," I spoke into the absolute dead silence of the room, my voice ringing with righteous fury, "contained the deed to a two-million-dollar estate, and a priceless family heirloom. It was a welcoming gift. And that woman on the floor is the mother who gave him everything."

I pointed a trembling finger at Michael, who was now frozen, surrounded by the disgusted stares of every investor, friend, and peer he had ever known.

"Integrity and family," I repeated. "You possess neither."

Photographers were snapping pictures frantically. Flashbulbs went off, capturing the absolute devastation on Cassandra’s and Michael’s faces.

"Effective immediately," I announced, pulling a thick envelope from my jacket, "Michael Whitaker is terminated from his position as Vice President of Whitaker Development. He is stripped of all shares and removed from the board."

"You can't do that!" Michael yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "I'm your son! I'm half of this company!"

"You own zero percent of this company," I corrected him coldly. "And you have thirty days to vacate the company-owned penthouse. Furthermore, all family trusts have been dissolved and redirected to charity. You wanted to build a brand, Michael? Build it from scratch."

Cassandra turned to Michael, her eyes wide with frantic horror. "Michael, do something! Tell him he can't do this! The penthouse? My accounts?!"

"Shut up, Cass!" Michael snapped, finally turning his rage on his wife.

The crowd erupted in murmurs of disgust. Cassandra’s parents looked like they wanted the floor to swallow them whole. Beatrice was hiding her face behind her clutch.

I stepped down from the podium and walked directly to the front table. I dropped the termination papers right onto Michael’s plate.

"You told your mother not to embarrass you," I said softly, so only he could hear. "I hope I lived up to your standards."

I walked over to Ellen, who was standing tall, tears in her eyes, but a gentle, vindicated smile on her lips. I offered her my arm.

"Shall we go, my love?" I asked.

May you like

"Yes, Robert. Let's go home."

We walked down the center aisle of the ballroom. The crowd parted for us like the Red Sea. No one said a word to us, but as we reached the doors, the shouting from the front table finally broke out as Cassandra began screaming hysterically at Michael.
