Chapter 6 - The Blank Canvas

Six months later, the dust had completely settled.

Apex Global Innovations was entirely mine. I immediately liquidated the consulting arm, severing ties with Adrian's toxic network, and pivoted the company’s capital into a venture capital fund dedicated to financing female-owned startups and domestic abuse shelters.

Adrian was a ghost. Stripped of his wealth and reputation, he had moved to a different state. The last I heard, he was working as a mid-level manager at a logistics firm, living in a rented condo. The constant fear of the IRS auditing him kept him quiet and completely out of my life.

My parents were living in a cramped, two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city. My mother still tried to call occasionally, leaving tearful voicemails about how hard life was, hoping I would swoop in and save them again. I had changed my number three times until they finally lost track of me. Family is not defined by blood; it is defined by respect. They had none for me, and I had no more sympathy left to give them.

I stood in the center of my new property. It wasn't a sprawling, ostentatious mansion meant to impress socialites. It was a beautiful, single-story home built around a breathtaking inner courtyard.

I walked out onto the stone patio. The morning sun was warm on my face. I had designed every inch of this landscape myself. Lush green ferns, tall whispering bamboo, and a gentle koi pond in the center created a perfect symphony of peace. It was a cinematic shot of absolute tranquility.

There was no fear here. No walking on eggshells. No bracing for an impact.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Sarah.

"The final transfer went through," she announced. "The old house is officially sold. The last of the shared assets are liquidated. You are one hundred percent untethered, Evelyn."

"Thank you, Sarah. For everything," I said, a genuine smile touching my lips for the first time in years.

"What are you going to do now?" she asked.

I looked around my beautiful, quiet garden. The air smelled of jasmine and fresh rain. My ribs were fully healed. My bank accounts were secure. My soul was entirely my own.

May you like

"Whatever I want," I replied softly.

I ended the call, tucked the phone away, and picked up a watering can. The nightmare was over. The blank canvas of my real life was just beginning to unfold, and I held the only brush.
