Chapter 5 - THE CORPORATE COUNTER-STRIKE: DISMANTLING THE EMPIRE FROM THE INSIDE

By Monday morning, the front page of every major financial daily and tabloid across the country bore the same explosive headline: THE BRIDE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH: $200M HEIRESS EXPOSES FIANCÉ’S MURDER PLOT AT THE ALTAR.
Inside the executive boardroom of Vance Medical Software, the atmosphere was charged with high-stakes tension. The mahogany conference table was buried under stacks of forensic audit reports, bank statements, and emergency injunctions. My executive board members sat around the perimeter, their faces pale and drawn, still reeling from the weekend's media firestorm.
I sat at the head of the table, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, no-nonsense knot. The white lace wedding dress was locked away in a evidence locker across town; today, I was wearing the armor of a corporate warrior.
"Miss Vance," our chief financial officer, Arthur Vance—a loyal family friend who had served under my father for decades—began hesitantly, sliding a fresh financial dossier across the table. "The fallout from the arrest is hitting the markets. Hale Capital’s stock has plummeted eighty-two percent in pre-market trading. Their investors are panicking."
"Let them panic," I said, my voice cool and even. "Arthur, what’s the status of the predatory debt restructuring Ethan tried to force through our board last week?"
Arthur adjusted his glasses, a grim smile touching his lips. "Completely neutralized. Because we intercepted his backdoor transfer protocols before the wedding, Ethan’s shell companies have no liquidity left. In fact, our legal team just filed an emergency motion to seize all of Vivian Hale’s personal real estate holdings as collateral against outstanding corporate loans her son embezzled."
"Good," I replied, leaning back in my leather chair. "I don't just want them in prison, Arthur. I want them legally and financially dismantled so thoroughly they can never afford a lawyer to challenge us again."
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open without warning. Daniel walked in, holding a secure encrypted tablet. He didn't look like an intelligence operative today; he looked like a general delivering dispatches from the front lines.
"We just received word from the holding facility," Daniel announced, standing beside my chair. "Ethan and Marcus have started turning on each other in interrogation. Marcus gave up the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands where they parked the embezzled funds from your father’s charity foundations."
I raised an eyebrow. "Cayman accounts? Did you verify the routing numbers?"
"Already frozen by midday yesterday," Daniel nodded, tapping the screen. "And Vivian? She’s threatening everyone from the precinct holding cells, claiming diplomatic immunity through some ancient family trusts in Europe. But her lawyers dropped her this morning once they realized her retainer was paid using embezzled corporate funds."
"Classic narcissist panic," I murmured, resting my chin on my intertwined fingers. "They spent their entire lives living off the illusion of untouchable wealth, built on fraud and manipulation. They never expected anyone to check the receipts."
"What’s our next move?" Arthur asked, looking at me with newfound reverence. "The media wants a statement by noon. The board is ready to issue a vote of full confidence."
I stood up, walking toward the floor-toceiling glass windows that overlooked the bustling Manhattan skyline. The morning sun reflected off the skyscrapers, brilliant and blinding. Down on the street, news vans were still clustered around our corporate headquarters, broadcasting live feeds to millions of viewers.
"Tell the press the truth," I said quietly, watching the city move below us. "Tell them that Vance Medical Software stands for innovation, integrity, and absolute protection of our assets—both digital and personal. And announce that our charitable foundation is launching a full-scale forensic audit of every luxury real estate project Vivian Hale ever touched."

Arthur smiled broadly and stood up to shake my hand. "Consider it done, Claire. Your father would have been damn proud of you."
"My father taught me how to build an empire," I replied softly, my reflection staring back at me with absolute clarity. "It turns out enemies taught me how to defend it."
