Chapter 2 - The Sound of Silence

Mara woke up to rain against the hospital windows and pain moving through her body in waves. The surgery had gone well, but recovery had a cruel silence to it. The steady beep of the heart monitor was her only immediate companion. As her eyes adjusted to the dim room, she noticed the meticulous arrangement of her surroundings. There were rare white orchids beside the bed, a cashmere blanket neatly folded on the visitor's chair, and no husband waiting by her side.

Ryan had called only after the scandal became too big for his publicist to control. The studio statement was already everywhere, plastered across every gossip site and entertainment news network. It said the hospital kiss reflected “the raw intensity of method performance” between two dedicated actors deeply immersed in their tragic roles. Ryan’s own PR team had shamelessly released another statement claiming he remained utterly devoted to Mara, asking for privacy while she recovered from a "minor procedure."

That was when Mara understood the second, far more sinister betrayal. He had not just abandoned her; he had weaponized her illness to make himself look like a martyr. He had borrowed her hospital bed as public relations cover, painting himself as the loving husband holding the fort, all while standing beside the woman who actively wanted to steal her life.

The heavy wooden door pushed open, and Vivian arrived. She carried two cups of black coffee, possessed a court-ready calm, and held a thick manila folder arranged like a loaded weapon. Inside were the indisputable facts of a broken marriage: hospital logs, the production schedule, Ryan’s deleted texts, hotel invoices, and undeniable proof that the kiss scene had been intentionally moved to the exact day of Mara’s surgery to maximize the dramatic press coverage.

Vivian laid out the receipts on the rolling tray table. They were from the Vesper Hotel, the Boston Four Seasons, and a private luxury suite Ryan had claimed was rented strictly for press junkets. The details were small, ordinary, and incredibly brutal. Room service bills for champagne and strawberries. Orders for blueberry pancakes at three in the morning. Dry cleaning for two bathrobes. Prenatal vitamins ordered from a private concierge pharmacy, billed to a dummy corporation.

Mara hated the pancakes most. Grand affairs and public scandals were one thing, but ordinary details—sharing late-night breakfast in bed—made the betrayal feel sickeningly real. It was domestic. It was a life he was building parallel to hers.

"Take a breath, Mara," Vivian said quietly, placing a manicured hand over Mara's trembling fingers. "Because this next part is going to rewrite the entire script."

Vivian slowly slid the sealed lab report from the back of the folder. She did not reveal everything at once, reading Mara's pale complexion, but she made one thing perfectly clear. Brielle’s pregnancy was not the clean, romantic tragedy Ryan wanted the world to believe. The DNA test, quietly intercepted by the Whitcomb family's unparalleled private investigators, connected Brielle not only to Ryan, but to Miles. Miles Devereaux: Ryan’s older brother, his fiercely jealous manager, and the man who had always lived in the golden boy's shadow. The child Brielle was carrying wasn't Ryan's. It was his brother's.
