Chapter 8 - The Director's Confession

Director Turner swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the door before landing on Stellan’s tactical stance near the exit. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, pale grey under the fluorescent warehouse lights.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Rowan," Turner stammered, attempting to regain a shred of his authoritative posture as he gripped the edge of the metal desk. "This facility... this operation is operating under executive seal. You have no jurisdiction here."

"Executive seal?" I asked, stopping two paces from his desk and tapping the screen of my decryption tablet. "Strange, because the cryptographic signature you used to authorize the four-million-dollar transfer into a Swiss shell company doesn't match any active executive order issued this decade."

Turner’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing with bitter resentment. "You always were entirely too thorough for your own good. Twenty years of sitting in that basement office, pretending to be a glorified secretary, while you quietly cataloged every single discrepancy in the department's ledger."

"Someone has to keep the books straight, Director," I replied evenly. "Otherwise, ambitious men with expensive tastes tend to misplace government assets for their own private retirement funds."

"It's not about retirement," Turner spat out, his voice rising in defensive anger. "The defense contracts are shifting. If we don't secure private capital for next-generation intelligence assets now, the agency will be gutted by budget cuts within six months."

"So you embezzled four million dollars through a dead Balkan logistics pipeline, using my old cryptographic signature as a convenient scapegoat if the audit trail ever went public," I summarized, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

"It was a victimless crime until you walked through that door," Turner hissed, his hand sliding slowly toward the bottom drawer of his desk where an emergency override button was concealed.

"I wouldn't touch that button, Director," Stellan warned from across the room, the metal click of his sidearm safety clicking off sounding like a thunderclap in the quiet warehouse. "Unless you want your career to end with a coroner's report instead of a federal indictment."

Turner’s hand froze inches from the drawer handle. He let out a long, shuddering breath, his shoulders slumping in total defeat as the weight of insurmountable evidence crushed his remaining defenses.

"How did you know I was the one routing the transfer?" Turner asked quietly, staring down at the polished metal desk.

"You made one fatal administrative error," I said, tapping my decryption tablet to display the full transaction log. "You used the exact same routing syntax for the Zurich transfer that you used back in 2006 during Operation Red Shield. You were always creatures of habit, Director. And habits leave paper trails."
