Chapter 6 - The Trial by Fire

It was a freezing November evening.
I was at a charity gala downtown—my first public appearance in months since launching my new environmental tech initiative.
Lucas was with me. Blake was babysitting the boys at my house.
I was nervous about leaving them alone, but Blake had sworn he had everything under control.
Halfway through the gala dinner, an old "friend" from New York approached my table.
Vanessa. The woman who had loudly spread rumors about my "affairs" five years ago.
“Emma! Darling!” she sneered, holding a glass of champagne.
“I see you’ve crawled out of hiding. Whose money are you spending tonight?”
The table went silent. Several tech investors looked over.
My face flushed hot with anger. I opened my mouth to reply, but a cold, booming voice cut through the room.
“She’s spending her own money, Vanessa. Which is a hell of a lot more than you have.”
I gasped.
Blake was walking into the ballroom.
He was in a stunning tuxedo, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire he was born to be.
He walked straight to my table, his eyes fixed on Vanessa like a predator.
“B-Blake?” Vanessa stammered, turning pale. “I thought you two were…”
“Divorced. Yes. Due to my own unforgivable stupidity,” Blake said loudly.
The entire room was listening now. Phones were recording.
Blake didn’t care.
He stood beside my chair, placing a protective hand on the back of it.
“Emma Winters is the most brilliant, loyal, and incredible woman I have ever known,” Blake announced to the room.
“Five years ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life. I doubted her. I was wrong. And if anyone in this room ever disrespects her again, I will personally ruin you. Understood?”
Vanessa practically sprinted away.
The room erupted in shocked whispers, but Blake only looked at me.
His eyes were soft, completely vulnerable.
“What are you doing here?” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. “Where are the boys?”
“Sleeping,” he smiled softly. “My security team and the nanny are watching them. I came because I knew Vanessa was on the guest list, and I wasn't going to let anyone hurt you again.”
He knelt beside my chair, uncaring of his expensive suit or the hundreds of cameras flashing.
“I spent five years tearing down your name, Emma. I will spend the next fifty building it back up.”
For the first time in five years, a genuine smile broke across my face.
I reached out and gently touched his cheek.
He closed his eyes at my touch, leaning into my palm like a starving man given bread.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
“Anything for you,” he replied.
We left the gala together.
For the first time since the airplane, the tension between us wasn’t hostile.
It was electric. It was the familiar, deeply rooted love that had never truly died, only buried under pain.
When we got back to my house, we walked softly into the boys' room.
Three little beds. Three sleeping angels.
Blake stood beside me in the dark, watching our children breathe.
“They asked about my dad today,” Blake whispered in the quiet room.
I looked up at him. “What did you say?”
“I told them my dad passed away. And then Leo asked me why I didn't have any kids of my own to play with.”
Blake’s voice cracked slightly.
“It took everything in me not to tell him.”
I took a deep breath. I looked at the man who had humbled himself, changed his entire life, and proven his devotion through actions, not words.
“Tomorrow is Saturday,” I said softly.
Blake looked at me, confused.
May you like
“They don’t have school,” I continued, slipping my hand into his. His fingers instantly intertwined with mine, gripping tight.
“I think tomorrow morning over pancakes… we should tell them who you are.”
