Chapter 2 - The Transformation

My father pulled back and looked at the navy-blue dress I was wearing.

His eyes darkened.

“What is this? Is this how Conway treats the heir to the Harrell fortune?”

“He doesn't know who I am, Dad,” I said quietly. “He thinks I'm a nobody. He left me here tonight to take another woman to the Apex Gala.”

My father’s grip on his cane tightened until his knuckles turned white.

The Apex Gala.

It was the most exclusive business event of the year.

What Spencer didn't know—what practically no one in his circles knew—was that the Apex Group was merely a subsidiary of Harrell International. My father owned the very ground Spencer was standing on tonight.

“He left you for the Apex Gala?” my father asked, a cold, terrifying smile touching his lips. “How fitting.”

He turned to his lead security officer.

“Call Marcus. Tell him the Harrell heir is attending the gala tonight. And bring in the team.”

Within ten minutes, our quiet living room was transformed into a high-end salon.

My father had brought his personal styling team, the best money could buy from New York and Paris, directly in the convoy.

Mrs. Gladys stood in the corner, her eyes wide with shock, finally realizing that the quiet, humble wife she had served for three years was royalty in disguise.

“Make her look like who she really is,” my father commanded the lead stylist.

They went to work.

The faded navy dress was discarded on the floor like trash.

In its place, they brought out a custom, hand-stitched haute couture gown that had literally been flown in. It was a deep, mesmerizing crimson red, off-the-shoulder, embroidered with subtle, dark jewels that caught the light like dying stars.

It was a dress of power.

A dress of vengeance.

My hair, usually tied up in a messy bun to scrub floors and cook Spencer's meals, was let down, styled into cascading, elegant waves that framed my face.

The makeup artist brought out features I had forgotten I had—sharp cheekbones, piercing, confident eyes, lips painted a striking, fearless shade of red.

Finally, my father approached me with a velvet box of his own.

He opened it, revealing the Harrell Family crest necklace—a flawless, teardrop ruby surrounded by immaculate diamonds, a piece worth more than Spencer’s entire company.

He fastened it around my neck.

I looked in the mirror.

The submissive, broken Phoebe Conway was gone.

Staring back at me was Phoebe Harrell.

Billionaire heiress. The untouchable queen of the financial world.

“Are you ready to show them, my dear?” my father asked, offering his arm.

“More than ready,” I replied, my voice steady, stripped of all its former weakness.

We walked out of the house.

I didn't look back. Not once.

We stepped into the back of the lead Maybach. The convoy smoothly pulled away, heading straight for the heart of the city.

Inside the car, my father handed me a tablet.

“I had my people do a quick audit of Spencer Conway’s company while you were getting dressed,” he said casually, as if destroying a man's livelihood was just a bit of light reading.

I scrolled through the documents.

Spencer’s company, Conway Tech, had secured a massive line of credit from Apex Group. He was highly leveraged.

“He’s practically swimming in debt, Dad. The only reason he’s afloat is because Apex gave him favorable terms.”

“Terms that were approved by my board because I told them to look out for my son-in-law,” my father corrected him. “Even when you hid from me, Phoebe, I watched over you. I made sure his business succeeded so you wouldn't starve. But if he thinks he achieved this on his own... it's time he learns the truth.”

I looked out the window at the glittering city skyline.

Spencer thought he was a titan of industry.

He was about to find out he was nothing more than a puppet, and I was the one holding the strings.
