Chapter 5 - The Mother’s Betrayal

Two days before the preliminary court hearing, my mother, Eleanor, arrived at my gate, begging for an audience.

Against my security team’s advice, I agreed to let her enter the house.

She walked into my living room looking stripped of her usual high-society elegance. Her hair was unstyled, her designer clothes wrinkled, and her eyes red from crying.

She looked small, frail, and entirely defeated.

“Mara,” Eleanor sobbed, throwing her hands up in desperation as she approached me. “You have to stop this! You are destroying this family! Grant’s business has collapsed! The banks seized his assets yesterday! And Celeste... Celeste is facing fifteen years in state prison!”

I sat calmly on the white sofa, cradling Lily in my arms, feeding her a bottle. I didn't even look up at my mother when she spoke.

“They committed crimes, mother,” I replied in a flat, even tone. “Crimes have consequences.”

“She is your sister!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings of the living room. “She was raised in this house! She had a hard life before we adopted her! You always had everything—the intelligence, the inheritance, your father’s pride! Celeste had nothing!”

I stopped feeding Lily, set the bottle aside, gently burped my daughter, and laid her down in the portable crib beside the sofa.

Then I stood up and faced my mother.

The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

“Celeste had everything I had,” I said, taking a step toward Eleanor. “She had private schools, unlimited clothing allowances, trips to Paris, and a mother who excused every single cruel thing she ever did.”

“She was fragile!” Eleanor argued defensively.

“She was a sociopath, Eleanor!” I shouted, my voice cutting through the room like a whip. “She spent her life trying to tear down everything I built because she couldn't stand seeing me succeed! And when that wasn't enough, she tried to take my baby!”

Eleanor flinched, stepping back.

“And you,” I continued, my voice trembling with years of suppressed pain. “You were my mother. You were supposed to protect me when I was lying on an operating table, bleeding and vulnerable. Instead, you stood in that hospital room and helped them try to lock me in an asylum!”

“I... I didn't know about the drugs!” Eleanor stammered, her eyes darting around frantically as she realized she was losing control. “Grant told me you were having a nervous breakdown! He said it was for the baby’s safety! I only wanted what was best for the child!”

“Liars always say they acted for the child,” I sneered coldly. “You did it because Grant promised you a two-million-dollar payout from my trust once Celeste was named Lily’s legal guardian.”

Eleanor went completely silent. Her face turned pale as chalk.

“Marcus found the bank transfers, mother,” I said quietly, pulling a paper from my pocket and tossing it onto the coffee table between us. “Grant transferred fifty thousand dollars into your personal checking account three days before I gave birth as a down payment for your silence.”

Eleanor stared at the piece of paper as if it were a venomous snake.

“Mara... please...” Eleanor whimpered, falling to her knees on the Persian rug, clutching at the hem of my pants. “I’m your mother! You can’t send your own mother to prison! Think of what people will say! Think of the family name!”

I looked down at the woman who had given birth to me, feeling no anger left inside me—only a vast, empty void of pity.

“The family name died the night you sold my daughter,” I said, pulling my dress away from her trembling hands. “You have twenty-four hours to sign over all your remaining claims to father’s estate and pack your belongings out of the family guest house.”

“And if I refuse?” Eleanor gasped, looking up at me with tear-filled eyes.

May you like

“Then the DA will formally name you as an unindicted co-conspirator in tomorrow morning’s bail revocation hearing,” I replied coldly. “Choice is yours, Eleanor.”

I turned my back on her and walked toward the grand staircase, leaving my mother weeping uncontrollably on the floor of my living room.
