Chapter 3 - The Illusion of Power

Ethan clawed desperately at Richard’s hand, his polished fingernails scratching against the thick, calloused skin of the retired soldier. "Let... go..." Ethan choked out, his face turning a mottled shade of crimson.

Richard applied just a fraction more pressure. Not enough to crush the windpipe, but enough to make Ethan realize how fragile his life truly was. "You are a very smart man, Ethan," Richard said calmly, his face mere inches from his son-in-law's. "You build firewalls. You protect data. But you forgot the most basic rule of security."

Ethan’s eyes bulged, wide with absolute terror. "Never," Richard continued, his voice dropping into a deadly register, "underestimate the physical perimeter."

With a swift, practiced motion, Richard swept Ethan’s legs out from under him and slammed him face-first onto the white carpet. Before Ethan could struggle, Richard drove a knee into the center of his spine, pinning him to the floor.

"Dad, stop! He’ll call the police!" Emily cried out. She pushed herself up against the bed, her face a heartbreaking canvas of purple bruising and fresh blood. Her eyes were terrified—not just of Ethan, but of what her father might do.

"Let him," Richard said, pulling the heavy-duty flex cuffs from his pocket. He grabbed Ethan’s right wrist, twisted it painfully behind his back, and secured the thick plastic strip. He did the same with the left. Zip. The sound was incredibly satisfying.

Ethan gasped for air, his cheek pressed into the carpet where Emily’s blood had fallen just moments before. As the immediate shock wore off, the CEO's arrogance returned. "You're a dead man, Hayes," Ethan spat, his voice raspy but venomous. "You just assaulted me in my own home. I have cameras. I have lawyers. By tomorrow morning, you’ll be in a federal penitentiary, and Emily will be in a psychiatric ward."

Richard stood up slowly. He looked down at the man who had tormented his daughter for six years. "You really believe your money makes you untouchable," Richard said, shaking his head. "You think you're a predator, Ethan. But you're just a bully who hits women."

Richard turned his back on Ethan and knelt beside Emily. For the first time since he entered the house, his rigid, tactical demeanor broke. His eyes softened. His hands, which had just neutralized a threat with lethal precision, were remarkably gentle as he reached out to touch her unbruised cheek.

"Emmy..." he whispered, using her childhood nickname. Emily broke down. The dam shattered. She fell forward, burying her face into her father’s chest. "I couldn't leave, Dad," she sobbed, clutching his flannel shirt with trembling hands. "He had all my passwords. He tracked my car. He told me if I tried to leave, he would ruin you. He said he’d plant child pornography on your computer. He said he’d destroy your pension."

Richard’s jaw tightened until his teeth ached. The depths of Ethan’s psychological warfare were worse than he had imagined.

"She's lying!" Ethan yelled from the floor. "She's unstable, Richard! She fell! I was trying to help her!" Richard ignored him. He opened his trauma kit, pulling out an antiseptic wipe and a sterile gauze pad. "Hold still, sweetheart," he murmured, carefully cleaning the cut above her eyebrow. "We're leaving. Right now."

"Where?" Emily asked, her eyes darting nervously toward Ethan. "He’ll find me. His security team... they track my phone." Richard took her expensive smartphone from her hand. He placed it on the floor. He raised his heavy combat boot and stomped down. The glass screen shattered into a hundred pieces.

"Not anymore," Richard said. He helped Emily to her feet. She was shaking, barely able to put weight on her left ankle. Richard scooped her up into his arms, carrying her just as he had when she was five years old and had scraped her knee on the driveway.

As he stepped over Ethan, the CEO was thrashing against his bindings. "You can't hide her from me!" Ethan screamed, a vein popping in his forehead. "I own this city! I own the police! I will hunt you both down!"

May you like

Richard paused in the doorway. He didn't turn around. "Hunt us, Ethan," Richard said quietly into the empty hallway. "Please. I want you to try."

He carried his daughter out the front door, leaving the millionaire tied up on his own bloody carpet.
