Chapter 12 - THE FINAL SUNRISE

The private jet climbed steadily above the thick cloud cover over Lake Michigan, leaving the grey concrete skyline of Chicago far behind us as the first golden rays of dawn broke across the horizon. I sat by the window in the plush leather cabin, watching the brilliant morning light wash over the endless expanse of clouds while Amara slept peacefully with her head resting comfortably in my lap, her small hand clutching a brand-new coloring book.
On the seat beside me rested a heavy manila envelope containing new identification documents, bank transfers, and clear title deeds to a quiet, sun-drenched coastal property three states away—a clean slate purchased with courage, loyalty, and the sharp eyes of an eight-year-old girl who knew that some questions were expensive, but the truth was priceless.

Down below, the city of Chicago settled into its morning routine, its vast criminal empires and family dynasties continuing their endless cycle of power, betrayal, and survival without missing a single beat. But the ghosts of the Valente estate were behind us now, locked away in holding cells and buried beneath winter snows, unable to touch us ever again.
I gently brushed a stray lock of hair from Amara’s forehead, smiled down at her peaceful face, and leaned back against the comfortable leather seat to watch the sunrise guide us toward a brand-new world where we finally belonged to ourselves.
