Chapter 7 - The Apex Predator Falls

Pandemonium broke out in the boardroom. The older directors were shouting, slamming their hands on the table.

Daniel's face was completely drained of blood. He looked frantically at Vanessa. "Tell them it was your idea! You set up the offshore accounts!"

Vanessa sneered at him, her glamorous facade melting into pure venom. "You pathetic idiot. I was a consultant. You signed the authorizations. You drugged your own wife. I have nothing to do with your criminal behavior."

She grabbed her designer bag and turned to the door.

But the two men in windbreakers stepped in front of her. They flashed their badges. "Veronika Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate espionage."

"You can't prove I knew about the drugs!" she hissed.

"We don't need to," Julian said, stepping forward. "Because when Daniel authorized the transfer last night on a monitored server, he also logged into your shared encrypted messaging app. We have every text. Including the one where you told him to double my dosage so I wouldn't wake up for the court hearing."

Daniel fell to his knees. The suave, arrogant man who had humiliated me in the courthouse hallway was now sobbing, begging the board members to listen to him. They turned their backs in disgust.

As the FBI agents cuffed them both, Daniel looked up at me. "Emily, please. I loved you. I got greedy, but I loved you."

I looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No grief. No guilt.

"Change your tune, Daniel," I whispered. "Where you're going, nobody cares about your excuses."

I watched as they were dragged out of the glass doors. The apex predator and the gold-digger, caught in the very trap they had spent a year building.
