Chapter 6 - Building Bridges

The first few weeks at Aunt Laura's condo were a blur of legal meetings and awkward transitions.
I officially called off the wedding.
Charlotte moved back to her parents' house in New York, leaving a trail of angry voicemails that I simply deleted.
I secured a job at a mid-sized financial firm downtown. It paid a fraction of what my family's trust provided, but it was honest money.
My biggest challenge, however, was Camilla.
She was highly protective of Leo, and rightfully so.
She didn't let me just waltz in and play dad. She set strict boundaries.
We started with supervised visits.
I would go to a local park near her Hialeah apartment on Saturday mornings.
"Push me higher, Lucas!" Leo laughed, swinging his legs.
He hadn't started calling me 'Dad' yet. I didn't push it. I had to earn that title.
"Hold on tight, buddy!" I said, giving the swing a gentle push.
Camilla sat on a nearby bench, watching us with a cup of cheap deli coffee in her hands.
I walked over and sat next to her.
"He's got a lot of energy today," I noted, smiling.
Camilla nodded. "He ate three pancakes for breakfast."
We sat in silence for a moment, watching our son.
"I have an interview next week," Camilla said suddenly.
I looked at her, surprised. "For an accounting position?"
"Yes. A small firm. Not like the corporate giants I used to work for, but... it's a start. The manager didn't seem to care about the gap in my resume."
"That's amazing, Camilla. You deserve it. You're brilliant with numbers."
She offered a small, hesitant smile. "Thanks."
"Look, if you need help with daycare, or... or anything financially. I have a job now. I want to contribute."
Camilla looked at me, her green eyes piercing.
"I don't want your mother's money, Lucas."
"It's not her money. It's mine. I cut ties with the trust."
Camilla's eyebrows shot up. "You really walked away from all of it?"
"I walked away from a cage," I corrected. "I'm free now. And my only priority is Leo. And making things right with you."
Camilla looked back at the swing set.
"You can't erase five years, Lucas."
"I know. But I can make sure the next fifty are better."

For the first time since I returned to Miami, Camilla gave me a genuine, warm smile.
"We'll see, Lucas. We'll see."
