Chapter 7 - The Fallout and the Police

I walked out, drove straight to the local police precinct, and filed a formal report for child endangerment and criminal negligence. I handed over the Disney paperwork, the case numbers, and my sworn statement of their phone calls and texts.
The police officer taking the report looked at the documentation, shook his head in disgust, and assured me that while criminal charges for abandonment require a high threshold, a formal investigation by Child Protective Services would definitely be opened against my parents and sister for their actions while acting as guardians.
The fallout was nuclear, and it happened fast.
Within forty-eight hours, an investigator visited my parents' home. The sheer humiliation of having a state vehicle parked in their pristine driveway sent my mother into a hysterical spiral. She tried to call me twenty times a day, leaving voicemails that vacillated between vicious, screaming insults and pathetic, sobbing apologies. I blocked their numbers.
Kara's life imploded even faster. When her husband found out about the police report, he was furious. His ex-wife's lawyer caught wind of the incident, subpoenaed the police records, and used it to paint Kara as an unfit and dangerous stepmother. Kara tried to show up at my apartment to beg me to retract my statement, but I threatened to call the police for trespassing. She screamed at me from the parking lot that I had ruined her life.
"You ruined it yourself when you walked away from a six-year-old in a crowd!" I yelled back from my balcony.
The extended family tried to intervene, of course. Aunts and cousins sent me messages telling me I was tearing the family apart, that I needed to practice forgiveness, that "family is family."
In response, I made a single post on my private Facebook page. I didn't use emotional language. I simply stated the facts: For those asking why I have cut ties with my parents and sister, on Saturday, they intentionally left my six-year-old son alone at a theme park and drove home because he needed to use the restroom. They did not inform me. He was rescued by strangers. I am protecting my child. Anyone who has an issue with this will be blocked as well.

I attached a blurred screenshot of Denise's text: You always overreact.
The silence from my relatives was deafening. The flying monkeys immediately retreated. Denise’s book club friends stopped calling her. My father stepped down from his position on the homeowner's association board due to the "gossip." The carefully curated, perfect image my mother had spent her life cultivating was burned to the ground.
