Chapter 3 - The March Down the Aisle
The church was completely full by the time my car pulled up.
Through the heavy oak doors, I could hear the nervous whispers of the guests.
The ceremony was already twenty minutes late.
I knew exactly what was happening inside.
My father was sitting in the front row, wearing his quiet satisfaction, expecting an announcement that the wedding was canceled.
He expected tears, humiliation, and a shattered daughter.
A uniformed sergeant, a friend from my squadron, stepped out of the driver's seat and opened my door.
I stepped out onto the pavement.
Not in white lace.
Not in satin.
I stepped out in full military dress.
My posture was straight, my hands were steady, and my head was held high.
I took one slow breath and squared my shoulders.
"Ready, Captain?" the sergeant asked with a small salute.
"Ready," I replied.
I walked up the stone steps and placed both hands on the heavy wooden doors of the church.
With one hard push, I swung them open.
The music hadn't even started yet, but the entire church fell dead silent.
Every single head turned toward the back.
In the front row, my father, my mother, and Tyler turned around.
My father’s smug smile vanished instantly.
His eyes darted from my polished shoes to the captain's bars on my shoulders.
I didn't break eye contact with him as the organist, catching the cue, began to play a powerful, swelling march.
I began my walk down the aisle alone.
No father to give me away.
I didn't need one.
As I passed the pews, I saw my father’s face turn from shock to deep, boiling anger.
He realized his plan had failed.
He leaned out into the aisle as I approached his row.
"You are embarrassing this family," he hissed under his breath.
I paused right next to his pew and looked down at him.
"You really thought a pair of scissors would stop me?" I asked quietly.
May you like
"You’re a fool," Tyler muttered from beside him.
But before my father could fire back, the heavy church doors opened again behind me.
