Chapter 12 - SUNRISE ON THE SAN JUANS: A FAMILY UNBROKEN

The storm had blown itself out by midnight, leaving behind a crisp, cloudless dawn that broke over the San Juan Islands with blinding, celestial brilliance. The air smelled of clean earth, crushed pine needles, and salt spray as the first rays of golden sunlight crested the distant Cascade mountains and poured across the cedar deck of the cliffside farmhouse.

Julian stepped outside onto the porch wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding two mugs of coffee. The Pacific below was calm, a vast sheet of liquid sapphire reflecting the morning sky. Perched proudly on its stone pillar at the edge of the cliff, the carved cedar heron caught the morning light, its wings shining like burnished gold against the horizon.

A soft, familiar sound echoed from the sliding glass door behind him. Ilaria wheeled herself out onto the deck, pausing to take a deep, contented breath of the fresh morning air before flashing her father a bright, gap-toothed smile.

"Good morning, Daddy!" she called out, wheeling herself right up to the edge of the railing where the endless ocean stretched out before them.

Julian walked over, handing her a small cup of warm apple cider before setting his coffee down and kneeling beside her wheelchair. He looked into her big, clear, fearless eyes—eyes that had witnessed darkness no child should ever know, yet now shone with the bright, unshakeable promise of a wonderful life.

"Good morning, my little captain," Julian said, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her out of the chair, setting her safely on his lap so they could both watch the golden sun climb higher into the infinite sky.

"Are we going to the beach today?" Ilaria asked eagerly, pointing down the winding wooden ramp toward the sandy cove below.

"Every single step of the way, sweetheart," Julian whispered, pressing a long, tender kiss to the top of her dark hair as the morning wind carried their laughter out across the endless sea. "Every single step of the way."
