Chapter 4 - The Eviction

"You can't do this! Do you know who I am?" Daniel shouted, struggling as the cold steel clicked around his wrists. His perfectly combed hair fell into his eyes, his designer blue shirt wrinkling as the officer pushed him against the wall to search him.

"Daniel!" Evelyn screamed, rushing forward. "Take your hands off my son! He is a good man! She’s lying, she must be lying!"

"Ma'am, step back or you will be charged with interfering," the female officer warned firmly, placing herself between Evelyn and Daniel.

"Clara!" Daniel roared, twisting his head to look at me. His eyes were wide with a frantic, unhinged rage. "Fix this! Tell them it's a mistake! You stupid bitch, I will ruin you!"

"That's enough," the officer growled, pushing Daniel toward the door. "You have the right to remain silent..."

I watched as they marched him down the driveway. Neighbors were beginning to peek out from their curtains. Daniel’s face was red, spit flying from his lips as he cursed my name. They folded him into the back of the patrol car.

Evelyn turned to me, her chest heaving, her eyes wild. The icy, composed woman was gone.

"What have you done?" she hissed, marching toward me. "You ungrateful, spiteful little snake! You staged this! You purposely provoked him!"

Before she could take another step, a sleek black sedan pulled up behind the police car. A woman in a sharp gray suit stepped out, carrying a leather briefcase. She walked up the driveway with the confidence of someone who owned the concrete she stepped on.

Mara Chen, my attorney.

She walked straight through the open front door, stopping beside me. She looked Evelyn up and down with clinical detachment.

"Clara, are you alright?" Mara asked.

"I am now," I said.

Evelyn glared at Mara. "Who are you? Get out of my son's house before I call the police myself!"

Mara opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of papers. "I am Mara Chen, Clara's legal counsel. And unfortunately for you, Mrs. Vance, this is not your son's house."

Evelyn let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Daniel pays the mortgage. His name is on the mailbox. You are delusional."

"Daniel pays half the property taxes, which he foolishly believed was a mortgage," Mara corrected smoothly. She handed Evelyn the first document. "This house is owned entirely by the Harrison Family Trust, of which Clara is the sole trustee and beneficiary. Prior to the marriage, your son signed a Marital Occupancy Agreement."

Mara handed over a second document, pointing to a signature at the bottom. Daniel's messy scrawl.

"In section 4, paragraph B, it clearly states that Daniel Vance is merely a permitted occupant. It also states that his right to occupancy is immediately terminated upon any filing of domestic violence, police intervention, or a restraining order."

Evelyn stared at the paper. Her hands began to tremble. "No... no, Daniel wouldn't sign this. He told me he bought this house."

"He told you a lie to protect his ego," I said softly. It felt incredible to finally speak the truth out loud. "He couldn't afford a house like this. He couldn't even afford the car he drives."

Mara checked her watch. "The police have served Daniel with an emergency protective order. He is legally barred from coming within 500 feet of Clara or this property. And as for you, Mrs. Vance..."

Mara pulled one final sheet of paper from her stack.

"...you are currently trespassing on private property. You have exactly ten minutes to gather your purse and leave, or I will ask the remaining officer outside to escort you off the premises."

Evelyn looked at me. The condescension, the mockery, the arrogance—it all crumbled, leaving nothing but an old, pathetic woman who suddenly realized she had bet on the wrong horse.

"You can't," Evelyn whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Where will I go?"

"I hear the moving company is already booked," I said, pointing toward the door. "Nine minutes, Evelyn."
