Chapter 3 - The Digital Ghost

The heavy oak doors of the private VIP recovery suite muffled the chaotic sounds of the hospital corridor, creating an artificial sanctuary where the only soundtrack was the steady, rhythmic hiss of oxygen and the hum of cardiac monitors. I sat propped up against a stack of crisp white pillows, my left arm bound in a supportive sling, nursing a cup of warm chamomile tea that Liam had personally insisted upon. The bruising across my throat had darkened into a bruised violet, making every swallow a deliberate, aching reminder of the night before.

Liam stood by the window, staring out at the rain-slicked asphalt of the parking lot below where a marked municipal squad car sat idling with its lights dark.

“The local authorities have him in a holding room down on the third floor,” Liam said without turning around. “His legal team is already mobilizing, threatening writs of habeas corpus and defamation suits. They still think this is a routine domestic dispute where a wealthy husband can smooth things over with a generous check and a high-priced attorney.”

“They don't know about the audit,” I whispered, my voice raspy and thin from the trauma to my trachea.

“No,” Liam agreed, turning back with a grim, humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes. “They don't. And more importantly, Ethan has no idea that the digital vault you built didn't just back up to a standard cloud drive. When you set up those encrypted partitions three months ago, did you route the secondary redundancy server through the military legal attaché’s network?”

I nodded slowly, feeling a cold comfort settle into my bones. “I used my old clearance credentials before my security clearance lapsed after the resignation. The files are housed on an encrypted server node that civilian subpoena powers can't touch without a federal national security override.”

Liam walked over, pulling a metal folding chair close to the bedside and sitting down. He reached into his breast pocket and extracted a sleek, military-grade secure tablet, laying it flat across my blanket. The screen flickered to life, displaying a complex, multi-tiered financial diagram filled with red warning flags, shell company trees, and offshore routing numbers originating from the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

“The independent forensic audit you requested was finalized at 4:00 AM today,” Liam said, tapping the screen to pull up a summary PDF. “Not only did Ethan siphon four point two million dollars in venture capital from Apex Development into private personal accounts under dummy LLCs, but he also forged municipal zoning signatures on the downtown civic center project to secure fraudulent bridge loans.”

My breath caught. I had suspected financial irregularities, but the scale of the fraud laid out in black and white went far beyond corporate mismanagement. It was federal-level white-collar crime.

“If those documents become public record,” I murmured, tracing the edge of the tablet, “Apex Development will be liquidated within forty-eight hours. Every building, every investor, every public award he’s ever bragged about will vanish.”

“It’s worse than that,” Liam replied steadily. “Because those funds crossed military contracting channels during our subcontracting phase three years ago, his fraudulent activities legally constitute federal defense contract fraud. The Department of Justice’s Major Fraud Unit was automatically looped into the data transfer this morning.”

Just then, a discreet knock sounded at the heavy door, and the chief of hospital security entered, accompanied by a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored charcoal pantsuit carrying a leather briefcase. She wore an identification badge bearing the gold seal of the United States Department of Justice.

“Colonel Carter? Mrs. Vance?” she asked, her voice clipped and professional. “My name is Special Agent Miller with the DOJ Fraud Division. I understand we have a substantial amount of encrypted evidence to review regarding Apex Development.”

Liam stood up, buttoning his white lab coat over his uniform shirt, his posture straightening into that of a commanding officer briefing incoming reinforcements.

“Agent Miller,” Liam said, gesturing toward the secure tablet on my bed. “My sister has been expecting you. Let me show you exactly how her husband built an empire out of sand—and how he’s about to lose every single grain of it.”
