Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Monster's Motive

While Nancy slowly began the grueling process of physical recovery, I threw myself into uncovering the truth.
I couldn't just accept Evelyn’s chaotic hospital confession that she “just wanted to prove a point.” Nobody risks murdering their only grandchild just for neighborhood bragging rights or a petty mother-in-law rivalry. There had to be something deeper. Something darker.
I hired a fierce family law attorney, a woman named Sarah Jenkins, to handle my impending divorce and sole custody filing. Through Sarah, I hired a private investigator to dig into Evelyn Carter’s life.
What the investigator found two weeks later made my blood run cold.
Sarah called me into her downtown office while Nancy was doing art therapy at the children's hospital.
“Your mother-in-law is a complete fraud, Samantha,” Sarah said, sliding a thick manila folder across her mahogany desk. “We dug into her finances. She portrays herself as a wealthy, country-club socialite, right?”
“Yes,” I nodded, confused. “Brandon's father left her a massive estate when he died ten years ago.”
“She blew through it,” Sarah said bluntly. “All of it. Bad investments, gambling debts in Vegas, and a shopping addiction that would rival royalty. Evelyn Carter is millions of dollars in debt. Her house has a third mortgage, and it's facing foreclosure next month.”
I stared at the financial documents, seeing red numbers everywhere. “But what does this have to do with poisoning Nancy?”
Sarah took a deep breath. “Two months ago, Evelyn applied for a massive, multi-million dollar life insurance policy on Nancy. She listed herself as the sole beneficiary, claiming she was establishing a trust for the child's future. The policy covers accidental death.”
The room spun. I gripped the armrests of my chair to keep from falling out of it.
“She… she was going to kill my daughter for money?”
“That’s part of it,” Sarah explained, tapping her pen. “But there’s a secondary motive. The investigator found emails between Evelyn and a shady family lawyer. Evelyn was inquiring about grand-parental custody rights in the state of California.”
I shook my head, trying to process the sheer evil. “Why?”
“Because Brandon is wealthy,” Sarah said softly. “He has a massive tech salary. If Evelyn could prove you were an unfit mother, and if she couldn't get the life insurance payout, her backup plan was to get custody of Nancy herself. If she had custody of her grandchild, Brandon would be legally and morally obligated to fully support her financially. She would use Nancy as a hostage to force Brandon to pay off her debts and fund her lifestyle.”
Tears of absolute rage pricked my eyes.
Evelyn hadn't just been a critical mother-in-law. She was a calculated, desperate, sociopathic parasite. She viewed my five-year-old daughter as nothing more than a lottery ticket or a pawn to save her sinking ship.
“Does Brandon know?” I asked, my voice trembling with fury.

“I sent the file to his lawyers this morning,” Sarah replied. “I imagine he’s reading it right now.”
I left the office with a newfound fire in my chest. I wasn't just a victim anymore. I was a mother protecting her cub from a predator, and I was going to make sure Evelyn Carter never saw the light of day again.
