Chapter 5 - Breakfast At The Penthouse

The presidential suite on the ninth floor of the Grand Hyatt San Diego offered a panoramic view of the bay.
Chloe stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, wearing a white hotel robe and holding a steaming cup of room-service espresso.
She looked out over the marina where million-dollar yachts were tethered against the pier, a triumphant smile lingering on her lips.
Behind her, Lucas emerged from the marble bathroom, his hair still wet from the rain shower.
He had spent twenty minutes scrubbing the sticky residue of blue buttercream from behind his ears and neck.
His eyes were still rimmed with red veins, but the swagger had returned to his step.
"I called the front desk," Chloe said, turning to him with an admiring glance. "The concierge booked us a table on the harbor deck for brunch."
"Good," Lucas said, pulling on a crisp white shirt he had kept folded in his duffel bag.
"We deserve it after that grotesque circus last night."
"Are you sure your mother won't convince Clarissa to do something crazy?" Chloe asked, setting her cup down on the glass table. "The way that old woman spoke to you was bizarre."
Lucas let out a dismissive scoff as he fastened his platinum cufflinks.
"My mother is living in the nineteen-seventies," he sneered. "She has no concept of how modern property law works."
"Clarissa's family might have owned trees in Oregon, but California law splits marital assets down the middle."
"I am the one earning four hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year now."
"A family judge will laugh her out of the courtroom if she tries to claim I have no right to that house."
He picked up his gold wristwatch from the nightstand and slipped it onto his wrist.
"Besides, I already took fifteen grand out of the house account to cover our suite and our expenses for the next two weeks."
"By the time she hires a lawyer, my corporate counsel will bury her under paperwork."
He walked over to Chloe, slid his arms around her waist, and kissed the side of her neck.
"Today begins my era, Chloe," he murmured against her skin. "No more nagging, no more family dinners, and no more playing the small-town martyr."
"I love the sound of that, Mr. Senior Vice President," she smiled, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
At ten-fifteen, they walked down to the hotel's sunlit dining patio.
Lucas ordered lobster eggs benedict, fresh papaya, and a bottle of vintage champagne.
He sat back in the wicker armchair, soaking in the admiration of the junior analyst who had validated his deepest fantasies.
When the waiter presented the bill inside a sleek leather folder, Lucas casually pulled a matte-black corporate card from his designer wallet.
"Put it all on this," he said smoothly without looking up.
The waiter bowed politely and stepped toward the terminal.
Three minutes later, the young man returned, his expression stiff and uneasy.
"I'm terribly sorry, sir," the waiter murmured, leaning in close so the surrounding patrons couldn't hear. "The transaction was declined."
Lucas frowned, his brows knitting in annoyance.
"That's impossible. It's an unlimited corporate executive card. Run it again."
"I ran it three times, Mr. Miller," the waiter said, handing the card back. "The code returns as Account Restricted by Issuing Authority."
Chloe’s smile flickered.
Lucas felt a sudden spike of heat in his chest.
He reached back into his wallet and pulled out his personal Chase sapphire card—the one holding the fifteen thousand dollars he had stolen the night before.
"Use this one," he ordered, his voice sharper now.
The waiter took the second card and returned to the register.
Chloe tapped her manicured nails nervously against the marble tabletop.
"Lucas, what's going on?"
"Nothing," Lucas snapped, checking his phone. "The hotel probably has a glitch in their merchant system."
The waiter walked back, holding the second card between two fingers, his face completely flat.
"I apologize, sir. This card was also flagged with an immediate code: Judicial Restriction - Contact Branch Manager."
Lucas shoved his chair back, the legs scraping loudly across the stone terrace.
"This is ridiculous!" he barked, his face flushing crimson. "Where is your manager?"
"Sir," the waiter said firmly, "unless you have another form of payment, we cannot clear the tab."
Lucas reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet.
He had exactly eighty-four dollars in cash.
The bill was two hundred and ten dollars.
Chloe stared at him, her eyes wide with shock and embarrassment as the patrons at neighboring tables turned to stare.
"Lucas..." Chloe whispered, horror creeping into her voice. "Pay them."
"I... I don't have enough cash on me," he stammered, looking around like a trapped animal.
"What do you mean you don't have enough cash?" she hissed, leaning over the table. "You told me you transferred fifteen thousand dollars last night!"
Lucas pulled out his cell phone and opened the banking application.
The screen loaded for several agonizing seconds before flashing a bold, red banner across the display:
ALL ACCOUNTS CURRENTLY SUSPENDED PENDING SAN DIEGO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT EX-PARTE ORDER #44892.
AVAILABLE BALANCE: $0.00.
Beneath the banner was a single notification from corporate HR at Apex Capital:

Lucas dropped his phone onto the table.
The glass screen cracked cleanly across the center.
