Chapter 10 - The Tuscan Villa and the Final Ultimatum

One week later, I was sitting on the sun-drenched stone terrace of a private villa outside Siena, Italy.

A sprawling sea of silver-green olive groves rolled down the hillside toward the ancient medieval towers of the city.

The air was warm, smelling of wild rosemary, cypress, and rich Tuscan earth.

On the wrought-iron table beside me sat a plate of thinly sliced prosciutto, aged pecorino cheese, and a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino.

I took a sip of the red wine, feeling the rich, velvety finish on my palate.

For seven days, I had completely ignored the noise of the Vance family’s implosion.

I had toured the Uffizi Gallery in Florence with a private art historian.

I had taken a cooking class in an old farmhouse where an Italian nonna taught me the art of rolling fresh tagliatelle by hand.

I had slept nine hours every night, waking up without an alarm, without anxiety, and without the suffocating weight of Mark’s perpetual entitlement.

My laptop chimed with a scheduled Zoom conference call.

I clicked the link and connected with Priya Sharma, who appeared on the screen sitting in her high-rise Seattle law office.

Priya was holding a steaming mug of tea, and her eyes were dancing with triumphant amusement.

"Claire, look at you," Priya laughed, leaning into her webcam.

"You have color in your cheeks! You look five years younger!"

"The Italian sun agrees with me, Priya," I smiled, leaning back in my chair.

"Give me the damage report."

Priya picked up a thick legal dossier and tapped the edges against her desk.

"It is an absolute bloodbath, Claire."

"Let's start with Hawaii."

"How did they get back?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"Uncle Greg took pity on Dana—and only Dana," Priya explained.

"He booked Dana a one-way economy ticket back to Seattle three days ago after she called him crying hysterically from a public payphone."

"What about Mark and Lorraine?"

"They were stuck in Maui until yesterday afternoon."

"Mark finally had to walk into a local pawnshop in Kahului and sell his luxury Rolex—the one you gave him for your second anniversary—along with Lorraine's diamond tennis bracelet."

"They got pennies on the dollar."

"Just enough cash to buy two standby economy tickets on a red-eye flight that routed through Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and finally Seattle."

"They landed at Sea-Tac this morning at six AM."

"And what did they find when they landed?" I asked, raising my wine glass.

Priya grinned broadly.

"They found my process server waiting at the baggage claim carousel."

"Mark was personally served with your petition for dissolution of marriage."

"Along with a formal subpoena for all bank records connected to Crestview Horizon Holdings."

"And what about Lorraine?"

"Lorraine tried to take an airport shuttle to her Mercer Island home."

"When she arrived, she found two armed private security guards stationed at the gate and a heavy chain wrapped around the driveway."

"All of her personal effects have been placed under judicial sequestration."

"Apex Capital has officially filed for an expedited sheriff's sale of the property to satisfy the five-hundred-and-twenty-six-thousand-dollar debt."

"She is currently staying on a pull-out sofa in Dana's studio apartment in Renton."

"A studio apartment that Dana is already three months behind on rent for."

I took another slow sip of the Brunello, letting the news settle into my spirit.

"Has Mark tried to contact your office?"

"He has called my reception desk every twenty minutes since eight o’clock this morning," Priya said.

"He is begging for a settlement conference."

"He claims he will sign whatever we put in front of him if you agree to drop the forgery affidavit against Crestview Horizon Holdings."

"He knows that if Apex Capital pursues the criminal referral with the King County Prosecutor, Mark is looking at class-B felony identity theft charges."

"He is terrified of going to prison, Claire."

"What are our terms, Priya?"

Priya leaned forward, her face turning razor-sharp.

"Here is the settlement agreement I have prepared for your review."

"Mark Vance surrenders all legal claims to any portion of your consulting business, future revenues, or intellectual property."

"He surrenders all claims to your marital home in Bellevue, transferring the title entirely into your name."

"He agrees to assume one hundred percent of the personal debts accrued under his name and indemnifies you against any future claims arising from Lorraine's holding company."

"In exchange, you simply agree not to pursue civil damages for the unauthorized funds he transferred to his mother over the past year."

"Apex Capital will still take Lorraine's house to satisfy their debt."

"Lorraine will be left with absolutely nothing."

"And Mark will walk away with his personal wardrobe, his four-hundred-dollar checking account, and a mountain of personal debt."

I looked out over the rolling Tuscan hills, where the afternoon sun was turning the olive leaves into shimmering sheets of silver.

"Send him the papers, Priya."

"Give him exactly twenty-four hours to sign."

"If he refuses, instruct the prosecutor’s office to move forward with the criminal indictment for forgery."

Priya smiled, a brilliant, vicious smile.

"Consider it done, Claire."

"Enjoy your wine. You earned every drop of it."

I closed the laptop, set it on the flagstone floor, and leaned back into the warm afternoon breeze.

For four years, Mark Vance had treated my loyalty as a blank check.

His mother had treated my kindness as weakness.

They had locked me out of their family vacation, fully expecting me to weep behind the closed front door.

Instead, I had walked out into the world, reclaimed my life, and left them to drown in the shallow pool of their own deceit.

I raised my glass to the Tuscan sky.

The family vacation was officially over.
