Chapter 3 - THE RED CARPET SPECTACLE: VICTORIA’S TRIUMPH AND JULIAN’S DELUSION

High above the subterranean sanctuary of Sterling Investment Group, the glittering façade of the Manhattan National Convention Center blazed under thousands of halogen lights. Limousines, Maybachs, and polished black SUVs lined the grand driveway, discharging high-powered executives, media moguls, political figures, and society elites who stepped out onto the sprawling red carpet amid a deafening chorus of camera flashes and shouting reporters.
At the center of the media storm stood Julian Sterling.
Dressed in his custom-tailored Italian tuxedo, his chest puffed out with unmistakable arrogance, Julian looked every bit the picture of a self-made titan of industry. Clinging to his arm was Victoria Sterling—though she was not yet legally a Sterling, she played the part with predatory precision. Her wine-red designer gown swept majestically behind her, drawing admiring glances and murmurs from the fashion journalists lining the velvet ropes.
“Julian! Julian over here! Look this way!” shouted a reporter from the Wall Street Journal, holding up a camera with a high-powered telephoto lens. “Is it true that Sterling Enterprises is closing a multi-million-dollar acquisition tonight with the Sterling Investment Group board?”
Julian beamed, adjusting his platinum watch—the very one I had gifted him years ago—so that it caught the glare of the camera flash just right. He raised a hand, playing to the crowd with practiced charisma.
“We are always looking forward, expanding our horizons, and forging bold new alliances,” Julian said smoothly into a thrust microphone held by a local news anchor. “Hard work, relentless ambition, and absolute dedication to excellence are what built my empire from the ground up. Tonight marks a monumental milestone for my firm.”
Beside him, Victoria beamed adoringly, gazing up at Julian as if he were a modern-day god. “Julian has worked tirelessly for this moment,” she added, chiming in for the microphones with practiced media training. “His vision is unmatched. Anyone who doesn’t see his brilliance simply doesn't belong in his world.”
A few feet away, Evelyn and Chloe soaked up the reflected glory like royalty basking in public adoration. Evelyn adjusted her diamond brooch, chin held high, while Chloe actively recorded live video streams on her phone, narrating the scene to her thousands of followers.
“Look at my brother and future sister-in-law owning the red carpet!” Chloe chirped into her phone camera, panning across the flashing cameras and roaring crowd. “True power recognizes true power. No dead weight here tonight, folks! Only winners!”
Inside the grand VIP reception hall, the atmosphere was electric. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over hundreds of guests mingling near mahogany cocktail bars and seafood stations. Wall-to-wall security personnel in dark suits monitored the perimeter, ensuring that only the most elite members of society—those holding exclusive gold-embossed invitations—were permitted inside the inner sanctum where the keynote speeches were about to take place.
Julian walked through the double doors of the ballroom like a conquering hero. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd of corporate titans.
“That’s Julian Sterling,” murmured a senior partner from a rival venture firm, watching Julian enter with Victoria on his arm. “Rumor has it his firm is about to secure primary backing from the elusive Sterling Investment Group board tonight. If that happens, he’ll practically own Manhattan real estate by the end of the year.”
“Impressive guy,” another executive replied, swirling champagne in a crystal flute. “And that stunning woman with him—such high society presence. Much better than that quiet, invisible wife of his that nobody ever sees.”

Julian overheard the murmur and smiled smugly to himself. He felt invincible. He felt untouchable. He genuinely believed he had conquered the world entirely on his own merit, casting off every anchor that had ever slowed him down.
He had no idea that the foundation beneath his feet was built on sand, and that the tide was about to come in with devastating force.
