Chapter 7 - THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE: TEENAGERS, LUGGAGE, AND BROKEN TIES

The atmosphere inside the luxury town car on the drive away from the empty lot was thick enough to suffocate a grown man.

No one spoke. The only sound was the low hum of the air conditioning and the muffled, angry sniffing of Sienna, who was furiously dabbing her smeared mascara with a designer tissue.

Ethan sat in the front passenger seat, staring straight ahead through the windshield, his face carved from stone. His reputation, his finances, his marriage, and his pride had all evaporated in less than five minutes.

"Where are we even going, Ethan?" Sienna snapped, breaking the silence with venom dripping from every syllable. "You dragged me across the world for a destination wedding, you promised me a luxury suburban estate to move into immediately, and now we are standing on a pile of dirt! Where am I supposed to sleep tonight?! In a hotel?!"

"We are going to a hotel," Ethan muttered through clenched teeth, his hands gripped so tightly around his knees that his knuckles were stark white. "I have credit cards. We’ll stay at the Marriott downtown until I figure this out."

"Hotel?!" Ethan’s mother shrieked from the back seat, her voice trembling with indignation. "After everything we went through? After flying fifteen hours across the globe? Ethan, how could you be so stupid?! You let that woman outsmart you completely!"

Ethan didn't defend himself. He couldn't. Every word his mother spoke was a jagged truth he refused to acknowledge.

He turned his head slowly to look in the rear-view mirror, his eyes locking onto our two children, Leo and Chloe.

Leo was staring out the window, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, refusing to even look in his father's direction. Chloe sat next to him, her expression colder and more distant than Ethan had ever seen it.

"Leo... Chloe..." Ethan started, his voice strained and fragile. "Look, I know this looks bad right now. But adults have complicated issues—"

"Don't," Chloe cut him off, her voice startlingly calm, mature, and cutting.

Ethan blinked, stunned. "Chloe, please—"

"Save it, Dad," Chloe turned her head slowly to face him, her eyes burning with a cold, unforgiving fire. "You told Mom you wanted a fresh start. You told her she was 'old things' you didn't want in your life anymore. Well, guess what? You made your bed. Now you get to sleep in it with Sienna in a hotel room."

"Chloe, that is no way to talk to your father!" Sienna hissed, trying to assert some form of authority.

Leo let out a sharp, cynical laugh. "Shut up, Sienna. You’re not our mother. You’re just a temporary mistake Dad made before he destroyed our entire family. When we get to the hotel, book me a flight back to Aunt Sarah’s house. I’m not staying another minute with either of you."

"Me too," Chloe added instantly. "I’m calling Mom the second we check in. At least she actually has a home."

Ethan closed his eyes as a wave of profound, crushing despair washed over him. The family he thought he could effortlessly manipulate, discard, and replace had fractured completely around him. The destination wedding, the tropical photos, the smug text messages sent from across the ocean—it all felt like a lifetime ago, replaced by the grim, humiliating reality of a homeless man standing on a barren concrete slab.
