Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut and the Final Betrayal

The climax of the trial arrived when the prosecution finally played the video.

The courtroom lights were dimmed. The large screens flickered to life. There was no audio at first, just the high-definition footage of my kitchen. The jury watched as I stood at the stove, stirring a small pot of soup. They watched Vivian enter the frame, her face twisted in a vicious sneer.

Then, the audio kicked in. The courtroom echoed with Vivian’s cold words: “You embarrass this family. A good wife would never keep her husband waiting.”

They watched, in horrifying clarity, as Vivian grabbed the heavy pot of oil that had been heating on the back burner for deep-frying. They watched her lift it with absolutely no sign of arthritis or weakness. They watched her hurl it directly at my back.

Gasps echoed through the jury box. One juror covered her mouth, tears springing to her eyes.

Then came the sound of my screams. Raw, agonizing, endless screams that made my own skin crawl as I sat in the gallery. But the most damning part wasn't the violence. It was the immediate aftermath.

The camera clearly showed Daniel walking into the kitchen. It captured him looking down at me as I writhed on the floor in agony. It captured him wiping his shoe, adjusting his cuffs, and whispering to his mother, “Get the bleach. We need to say she slipped on a wet floor.”

When the video ended and the lights came back on, the courtroom was dead silent. You could hear a pin drop. Julian Vance looked at his notes, his face pale, realizing his career was essentially over for defending this so aggressively.

Daniel couldn't take it anymore. The narcissist's ego cannot survive public humiliation. He abruptly stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor.

"She pushed us to this!" Daniel screamed, pointing a trembling finger at me in the gallery. "You don't know what it's like living with her! She's cold! She withheld her money from me! I was her husband, I deserved that trust fund! She tricked me! She made me sign fake documents!"

The judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Mr. Cross, sit down and be quiet, or I will have you gagged and restrained!"

But Daniel was spiraling. "My mother did it! I didn't throw the oil! Vivian is crazy, she's always hated her! Put her in jail, not me!"

Vivian shrieked, lunging across the defense table toward her son, her hands clawing at his face. "You coward! You spineless little coward! This was your plan!"

Bailiffs rushed the table, forcefully pulling the two of them apart. It was a pathetic, disgusting display of two monsters turning on each other the moment their survival was threatened. The jury looked on with absolute disgust.

I sat perfectly still, my hands folded neatly in my lap. I caught Detective Miller’s eye across the room. He gave me a slow, satisfied nod. The legal trap hadn't just snapped shut; it had crushed them entirely.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours. It was one of the fastest verdicts in the county's history.

Guilty on all counts. Aggravated assault. Attempted murder. Conspiracy. Fraud.

As the foreman read the verdict, Daniel collapsed into his chair, weeping openly. Vivian simply stared straight ahead, completely catatonic. They were remanded into custody immediately, denied any chance of appellate bail. The empire they thought they had stolen from me was ashes, and they were the ones who had struck the match.
