Chapter 6 - THE ASHES OF VANCE CAPITAL

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, cutting through the smog and casting a sharp, unforgiving light across the glass facade of Vance Capital’s sleek Madison Avenue headquarters.
By 8:15 AM, the lobby was already a circus.
Television news vans choked the curb, their satellite dishes pointed skyward while reporters in heavy trench coats shouted into handheld microphones. Inside, security guards were desperately trying to block a swarm of investigative journalists who had caught wind of the overnight federal raids and the sudden, catastrophic insolvency of the firm.
Julian Vance sat in his executive corner office on the forty-second floor, but the view that had once made him feel like a god now looked like a prison sentence.
His custom Tom Ford tuxedo from the night before was rumpled, smelling faintly of stale champagne and cold sweat. His hair was disheveled, and his hands trembled uncontrollably as he stared at the red flashing light of his office landline.
The phone had not stopped ringing for two hours.
Bankers demanding immediate loan repayments. Board members screaming about fiduciary betrayal. Federal investigators leaving stern, unreturned voicemails regarding offshore accounts that had mysteriously vanished into thin air.
The heavy mahogany office door flew open without a knock.
Victoria stumbled in, her designer red gown stained with coffee from the lobby chaos, her mascara running in dark, jagged streaks down her cheeks.
"Julian! What is happening?!" she shrieked, slamming the door shut behind her. "I just tried to log into my corporate expense account and it’s completely locked! My apartment lease company just called—they said my rent check bounced! And the media outside are calling us financial criminals!"
Julian looked up slowly, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy of Manhattan was completely gone, replaced by a broken man who had finally realized he was nothing more than a puppet whose strings had been cut.
"It’s gone, Victoria," Julian whispered, his voice raspy and dead. "Everything... it’s all gone."
"What do you mean it's gone?! Call your wife! Call Clara!" Victoria screamed, marching over to his desk and slamming her hands down on the wood. "She’s rich, isn't she?! Whoever that woman was at the gala last night—use her! Beg her for money! You're her husband!"
Julian let out a harsh, broken laugh that sounded dangerously close to a sob.
"My wife?" Julian choked out, staring down at his empty hands. "Victoria... do you have any idea who Clara is?"
Victoria blinked, her frantic expression faltering for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about? She’s just some poor girl you rescued from an apartment above a print shop! That’s what you always said!"
"I lied," Julian whispered, the confession tasting like ash in his mouth. "Or... or rather, I was a fool who believed my own lie. She didn't need rescuing. She was never poor. That apartment... that rusted car... it was all a game to her. Clara isn't just some random woman."
"Then who is she?!" Victoria yelled, shaking his shoulders in frustration.
Before Julian could answer, the office door was pushed open by two federal agents in dark suits, flanked by Marcus Vance holding a thick leather briefcase.
"Julian Vance," the lead agent said, holding up a fresh set of federal indictments. "You are being placed under formal arrest for corporate fraud, asset concealment, and conspiracy to commit securities manipulation."
Julian didn't even try to stand up. He slumped back into his leather executive chair, staring blankly at the floor as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
Marcus Vance stepped forward, pausing beside Julian’s desk. He reached into his briefcase, pulled out a single sheet of heavy cream-colored paper, and dropped it right on top of Julian’s shattered phone.
"What is this?" Julian muttered, staring at the heading through his tears.

"It’s your divorce petition," Marcus replied calmly, his voice devoid of any pity. "Filed on behalf of Clara Sterling. Along with an eviction notice for the house, which, as it turns out, is being repurposed as a community homeless shelter."
Julian closed his eyes, the final pieces of his arrogant empire crumbling to dust around him.
