Chapter 6 - REBUILDING THE EMPIRE

Three weeks after the incident in the Hamptons, Apex Technologies announced its Series C funding round: a staggering one-hundred-million-dollar valuation led by Silicon Valley's most prestigious venture capital firms.

The financial press ran glowing profiles of me across every major tech publication. Forbes featured my face on the digital cover with the headline: The Architect of Apex: How Chloe Davenport Built an Empire Without Compromise.

Not a single mention of Preston Vance. In the eyes of the business world, he had already been scrubbed from history like a bad software update.

I sat in my corner office, reviewing the final restructuring documents with Marcus, when my sister Harper walked in carrying two cups of artisanal coffee and a thick envelope with a court seal.

"Delivery from the family court," Harper said, tossing the envelope onto my desk with a satisfied smirk. "Looks like your ex-husband's lawyer has officially abandoned ship."

I picked up the envelope, sliding out the formal legal notice. Sterling Sr. had formally withdrawn as Preston’s legal counsel, citing an "irreconcilable breakdown in client communication and non-payment of retainer fees." Translation: the Vances were officially broke, and nobody was willing to throw good money after a lost cause.

"How is the criminal case progressing?" I asked, taking a sip of the hot coffee.

"The District Attorney's office is moving forward with felony assault charges," Harper said, sitting down in the leather chair opposite my desk. "Between cousin Brooks's high-definition video evidence, the medical records of your bruising, and the witness statements from the caterers, it's an open-and-shut case. Preston is facing up to three years in state prison. Hayes and Sterling are trying to cut a deal by throwing Preston and Brooks under the bus."

I nodded slowly, feeling a profound sense of closure settling into my bones. The universe had balanced its books.

"And Vivian?" I asked.

"Sold her jewelry, put the Greenwich estate on the market at a massive fire sale, and moved into a two-bedroom condo in New Jersey," Harper laughed, shaking her head. "Karma is a magnificent artist, Chloe."

"It really is," I agreed, looking out the massive glass window.

For seven years, I had believed that love meant enduring disrespect, that partnership meant shrinking myself so that a mediocre man could feel tall, and that peace could only be bought with endless compromise. But standing there at the top of the world, looking at an empire I had built with my own mind and my own hands, I realized the ultimate truth of my life:

I didn't need a man to validate my worth. I didn't need a family's approval to belong. And most importantly, when someone tries to drown you in their cruelty, you don't apologize for surviving—you build a fortress they can never touch.
