Chapter 5 - The Hollowing

The hospital was a blur of fluorescent lights, cold metal stirrups, and the quiet, devastating shake of a doctor's head.

The baby was gone.

When the doctor delivered the news, I didn't cry. I couldn't. I felt entirely hollowed out, as if Cole and Evelyn had scooped out my insides and left me as nothing but a shell.

My father stayed by my bedside. He didn't offer empty platitudes. He didn't tell me everything happened for a reason. He simply held my hand, letting me grieve in the quiet sanctuary of his presence.

"I stayed too long," I whispered into the sterile air of the room.

"You left tonight," my father corrected gently. "That is all that matters."

The legal system, guided by my father's invisible but heavy hand, moved with terrifying efficiency. Cole was charged with felony domestic assault, unlawful restraint, and interference with an emergency call. The neighbor's smart-doorbell camera had caught the audio of my screams; the dispatcher's recording captured Cole's arrogant admissions.

Evelyn tried to claim she had only "nudged" me to keep me from falling, but under a relentless deposition led by one of my father’s associates, her story fell apart. She was charged as an accessory.

By the end of the month, Cole was fired from his corporate job. By the end of the year, facing a mountain of undeniable evidence and the prospect of a ruthless prosecution, he pled guilty to avoid prison time, receiving a heavily monitored probation, a permanent criminal record, and a strict, lifetime protective order.

But the courtroom victory didn't fill the void in my womb.
