Chapter 3 - The Confrontation In The Lobby

Paige walked through the heavy glass doors of the law firm’s ground-floor lobby with her chin held high and her leather portfolio tucked firmly beneath her arm.

The marble-clad space was echoing with Dustin’s loud, abrasive voice as he berated the private security guard stationed near the turnstiles.

Dustin was wearing his expensive leather driving jacket—a gift I had bought him for his thirty-second birthday—and his hair was unkempt, betraying a night of sleepless agitation.

“I don't give a damn about your firm’s private visitor protocol!” Dustin shouted, pointing an aggressive finger at the guard’s chest.

“My wife is being held hostage in this building, and I have every legal right to take her home right now!”

“The only thing you have a legal right to, Mr. Vance, is the cold pavement outside this building,” Paige announced, her heels clicking sharply against the polished stone.

Dustin spun around on his boot heels, his eyes instantly narrowing when he saw Paige standing before him without me.

“Where is Audrey?” he demanded, taking two aggressive strides forward before the security guard stepped laterally to block his path.

“Keep your distance, Dustin,” Paige warned, her tone completely devoid of fear.

“You are currently on private corporate property, and you are creating a disturbance that will land you in the back of a patrol car within four minutes.”

Dustin let out a derisive scoff, running a frustrated hand through his dark hair.

“Paige, stay the hell out of my marriage,” he snapped, trying to project the same intimidating posture he had used in our living room.

“Audrey had a hysterical overreaction last night because of an unfortunate family misunderstanding.”

“She needs to come downstairs right now so we can go home, sit down like adults, and resolve this ridiculous drama.”

Paige stared at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt.

“An unfortunate family misunderstanding?” she repeated slowly, savoring every syllable.

“Is that what you call striking a sixty-eight-year-old widow across the face twice and sending her into a piece of furniture?”

Dustin’s eyes flickered with a sudden flash of panic, his gaze darting toward the security guard and the receptionist who were listening intently.

“I didn’t strike anybody!” Dustin hissed, dropping his voice to an urgent, defensive whisper.

“The old woman lost her balance when I confronted her about the stolen cash from my desk drawer.”

“She slipped on the area rug and hit her cheek on the edge of the console table; I was merely trying to steady her.”

Paige opened her leather folder, pulled out a glossy, high-resolution color printout from the urgent care clinic, and held it six inches from his face.

“Save your pathetic lies for the jury, Dustin.”

“This is the forensic medical evaluation signed by the attending trauma physician three hours ago.”

“It clearly details soft-tissue trauma, finger-shaped contusions, and lateral blunt-force impact consistent with an open-handed assault.”

Dustin flinched visibly, his face draining of color as he looked at the undeniable photographic evidence of his own violence.

“You... you took her to a clinic?” he stammered, his arrogant bravado crumbling around the edges.

“We took her to the clinic, and then we took her straight to Detective Ramos at the central police precinct,” Paige declared coldly.

“A felony domestic battery report has been officially logged under case number seven-four-zero-one.”

“An emergency protective order is currently being reviewed by a magistrate judge, prohibiting you from coming within one hundred yards of Audrey or Beatrice.”

Dustin’s hands began to shake with sudden, uncontrolled adrenaline.

“Are you completely insane?” he yelled, his voice rising once more into a panicked frenzy.

“You are ruining my life over a family squabble! I am a respected sales manager; a domestic violence charge will destroy my career!”

“You should have considered your career before you raised your filthy hands against the woman who gave birth to your wife,” Paige countered without blinking.

Dustin took a deep, ragged breath, shifting his weight as he attempted to switch from aggression to manipulative persuasion.

“Paige, look... you’ve known us for years,” he pled, his eyes widening with feigned desperation.

“You know how stressed I’ve been with the market downturn at the dealership.”

“I’ve been carrying the weight of the entire world on my shoulders, and discovering that Beatrice stole ten thousand dollars from my desk just broke me.”

“I lost my temper; I admit I was wrong to shout, but Audrey knows how much I love her.”

“Just let me talk to my wife for five minutes. We can fix this without lawyers and police reports.”

Paige tilted her head slightly, offering him a cruel, mocking smile that made Dustin’s stomach drop.

“Speaking of missing money, Dustin... let’s talk about Horizon Crest Holdings.”

The moment those three words left Paige’s lips, Dustin’s jaw dropped, and he froze as if struck by lightning.

His eyes darted erratically around the lobby, his Adam's apple bobbing violently as he struggled to swallow.

“I... I don't know what you’re talking about,” he whispered, his voice losing all its remaining strength.

“Really?” Paige asked, pulling a second sheet of paper from her folder.

“Because at six-fifteen yesterday evening, while Audrey was buying meat for your dinner, fifty thousand dollars was wired from your joint savings to Horizon Crest Holdings.”

“Then at seven-thirty, right before you attacked Beatrice, another sixty thousand dollars was transferred.”

“And while Audrey was sitting in a cheap hotel room comforting her bruised mother, the final fifty-nine thousand dollars was siphoned away.”

“You drained one hundred and sixty-nine thousand dollars of marital funds in under four hours using your private authentication token.”

Dustin leaned heavily against the visitor counter, his breathing turning shallow and erratic.

“That was... that was an urgent corporate restructuring investment,” he stammered, pulling wildly at his collar.

“It was an exclusive pre-market allocation arranged through an institutional broker; I didn't have time to consult Audrey because the window was closing.”

“I was trying to secure our retirement! I did it for our future!”

Paige let out a cold, merciless laugh that echoed across the high ceiling.

“You did it for your future, Dustin? Then you won't mind explaining that to the economic crimes unit of the district attorney’s office.”

“Because Chloe has already pulled the corporate registration filings from the California Secretary of State’s database.”

Paige stepped forward, closing the distance between them until she was staring directly into his terror-stricken eyes.

“Horizon Crest Holdings isn't an institutional brokerage, Dustin.”

“It’s a shell corporation registered three months ago under the primary name of Wyatt Vance, with Tristan Vance listed as the secondary executive officer.”

Dustin stumbled backward as if he had been slapped across the face himself.

“You stole your wife’s hard-earned architectural commissions to funnel them directly into an illicit fund controlled by your deadbeat brothers,” Paige hissed.

“You staged the missing ten-thousand-dollar cash drama to fabricate an explosive domestic pretext to kick Audrey out before she caught the bank alerts.”

“You thought you could beat her mother, break her spirit, kick her onto the street, and walk away with one hundred and seventy thousand dollars of her sweat and labor.”

“No... no, you don't understand the full picture,” Dustin pleaded, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine.

“Wyatt was in serious legal trouble with some private lenders; they were going to take his house and send him to prison!”

“I had to protect my family! Audrey has plenty of money, she makes twelve thousand a month, she could always earn it back!”

“Audrey Vance doesn't owe your criminal brothers a single breath of air,” Paige declared with absolute finality.

She thrust a thick packet of legal documents directly against Dustin’s chest, forcing him to catch them in his trembling hands.

“These are the preliminary divorce petitions filed on the grounds of domestic abuse, financial fraud, and breach of fiduciary marital duty.”

“We are demanding a complete freezing of all personal and corporate accounts associated with you, Wyatt Vance, Tristan Vance, and Horizon Crest Holdings.”

“We are seeking one hundred percent restitution of the stolen funds, plus punitive damages and lifetime spousal support.”

“And by five o'clock today, the San Diego Police Department will serve an active warrant for your arrest regarding the assault on Beatrice.”

Dustin looked down at the court summons in his hands, his knuckles shaking so violently that the papers rustled loudly in the silent lobby.

“Tell Audrey she is making the biggest mistake of her life,” he choked out, his arrogance completely shattered into desperate panic.

“If she ruins my family over this, I will drag her through every court in this state until she doesn't have a penny left!”

“You don't have the money for a parking ticket, let alone a protracted legal war, Dustin,” Paige said, turning her back on him completely.

“Officer, please escort this trespasser off the property immediately.”

The security guard stepped forward, grabbing Dustin firmly by the shoulder and steering him toward the heavy revolving doors.

Dustin stumbled out onto the sunny sidewalk of San Diego, clutching his summons like a condemned man reading his own execution order.

Up on the fifteenth floor, standing behind the tinted glass of the conference room, I watched his small figure walk frantically down the street, clutching his phone to his ear.

He was undoubtedly calling his brothers, realizing for the first time that the gentle, quiet woman who had financed their comfortable lives had finally closed the vault forever.
