Chapter 2 - The Phantom Billionaire

Arthur Pendelton's office was hidden behind an unassuming mahogany door in the heart of the financial district.

I arrived soaking wet, shivering, and covered in mud, but Arthur didn't bat an eye.

He simply handed me a hot towel and poured two glasses of scotch.

"Your father was a master chess player, Naomi," Arthur said, sliding a massive stack of leather-bound files across his desk. "Gavin thought he was playing the long game by marrying you. He had no idea your father was playing a game on an entirely different board."

I took the iron key from my pocket and set it on the desk.

Arthur used it to unlock a heavy steel drawer, pulling out a single golden certificate.

"Welcome to Apex Holdings," Arthur smiled, his eyes gleaming with a predatory light. "The true parent company of Summit Enterprises. You own ninety-nine percent of it. Gavin's company is now legally bound to pay lease fees, patent royalties, and operational dividends directly to you."

I stared at the paperwork. My father had orchestrated the greatest corporate sleight of hand in history.

"But I have no money right now," I said, my voice hoarse. "Gavin canceled my cards. He took the house. He thinks I'm begging on the streets."

"Which is exactly where we want him to think you are," a deep, smooth voice interrupted from the corner of the room.

I turned.

Sitting in a wingback chair, partially hidden by the shadows, was a man I recognized instantly.

Alexander Thorne.

He was the CEO of Thorne Capital, a ruthlessly efficient venture capital firm, and my father's most formidable rival. He was dangerously handsome, with sharp jawlines and piercing gray eyes that seemed to strip away all defenses.

"Mr. Thorne," I managed to say, clutching the towel tighter around my shoulders. "What are you doing here?"

Alexander stood up, towering over me. He buttoned his impeccably tailored suit and stepped into the light.

"Your father saved my firm from bankruptcy ten years ago. I owed him a life debt," Alexander said, his voice dropping an octave. "Before he died, he called me. He told me that if anything happened to him, Gavin would strike. And he asked me to protect you."

I scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "I don't need protection. I need revenge."

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Alexander's face.

"I know. That's why I'm not here to be your bodyguard, Naomi. I'm here to be your weapon."

He walked toward me, pulling out a sleek black titanium credit card and placing it gently into my palm.

"You are going to disappear for three months," Alexander instructed. "You will live in my private penthouse. You will learn every loophole in corporate law. You will transform into the CEO your father knew you could be. And when you return..."

"...Gavin won't even see the blade coming," I finished for him.

Alexander's eyes locked onto mine, a spark of genuine admiration flashing in his gray irises.

"Exactly."

I looked at Arthur, then at Alexander, and finally down at the golden certificate bearing my name.

For the first time since my father's heart monitor flatlined, I felt a surge of absolute, unstoppable power.

Gavin Barrett wanted to play a game of kings and queens. But he forgot that the queen is the most dangerous piece on the board.
