Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Closet

The ultrasound gel was still drying on my stomach when my world started to unravel. It was supposed to be a morning of pure joy. For the first time in twenty-six weeks, our daughter had finally turned toward the screen, letting me see the delicate curve of her nose. Damon had claimed he was too busy to come. An urgent morning meeting, he had said, kissing my forehead before rushing out the door. I came home from my prenatal appointment carrying our daughter’s ultrasound picture when I heard something crash upstairs.

The moment I opened the bedroom door, I froze. Damon was shirtless beside our unmade bed, yanking up his pants. “You’re home early,” he said. His voice came out too fast. Too sharp. He snatched a white shirt off the floor, quickly adding, “I spilled coffee. I was changing.” There wasn’t a single stain on it. Then I saw the champagne-colored lace camisole shoved beneath the bench at the foot of our bed. A tiny blue charm hung from one strap. I knew that camisole. Claire had shown it to me after her engagement dinner, laughing about how much Owen had spent on it. My stomach tightened, and the air in the room suddenly felt too thin to breathe.

Then I noticed something even worse. The closet door was barely cracked open. Inside, a trembling hand gripped the sleeve of my cream winter coat. A diamond ring sparkled in the darkness. Claire. My best friend of twelve years. The woman I had trusted enough to name godmother to my daughter. Damon shifted directly into my line of sight, trying to block the closet. “How did the appointment go?” he asked, a bead of sweat forming on his temple.

I looked at him. At his messy hair. At the twisted, tangled sheets on the bed we shared. At the ultrasound picture still trembling in my hand. Now I knew exactly what kind of meeting had kept him occupied. “She’s healthy,” I said quietly, forcing my voice to stay level. Behind the closet door, Claire didn’t move. Every part of me wanted to rip that door open. I wanted answers. I wanted excuses. I wanted to watch them try to explain the impossible. Then I spotted Damon’s phone lying face-up on the mattress. Claire’s phone was probably hidden in the dark with her. If I confronted them now, they’d panic. They’d delete everything, coordinate their stories, and gaslight me into thinking I was crazy before I could ever reach Owen. The only thing protecting me right now was their confidence. They thought I knew nothing.

I pressed a trembling hand against my belly, playing the fragile, pregnant wife. “I’m feeling light-headed,” I said. “Can you get me some water from the kitchen?” Relief flashed across Damon’s face so quickly it made me sick. “Of course, honey. Right away.” As he turned away and hurried down the hall, I lowered my phone and snapped a picture. The camisole under the bench. The unmade bed. The diamond ring barely visible in the closet. Everything. Then I walked to the nursery across the hall and waited.

A minute later, I heard the bedroom door shut. Soft, hurried footsteps. The side door downstairs opening. Closing. Gone. When I walked back into the master bedroom with the glass of water Damon finally brought me, every trace had disappeared. The bed was smoothed out. The camisole was gone. But I already had what I needed.

I locked the nursery door and opened the security app connected to our smart house. Claire had her own emergency access code because I trusted her. The log loaded. Six entries. Six times she had entered my home over the last three months using her specific pin. Every single visit matched a prenatal appointment Damon had insisted I attend alone, claiming he wanted to protect his sick days for when the baby arrived. The first entry appeared just three days after Claire had cried in my arms and promised she would always be there for my daughter. My finger hovered over Owen’s number as another notification finished loading onto the screen. It was an alert from our joint savings account. Withdrawal: $15,000. Memo: Aspen Chalet Deposit. Damon had told me he was going to Aspen next month for a solo corporate retreat. He wasn't going alone.
