Chapter 7 - The Trap

I went straight to the FBI field office with Elena.

I handed the manila envelope to Special Agent Harris, the lead investigator on Victor’s embezzlement case. We told him everything about Sullivan, the blackmail attempt, and my father’s involvement.

Harris looked at the documents, impressed. “This is witness tampering and extortion, Ms. Vance. Not to mention the final nail in the coffin for his fraud case. But we need to tie this back to Hale. We need Sullivan.”

“I can get him,” I said, a dangerous new resolve hardening in my chest. “He gave me a burner phone to call him with my answer. I’ll tell him I accept the deal, but I want to meet in person to sign the non-disclosure agreement. I want Victor on speakerphone when I do it.”

Elena looked at me, a proud smile playing on her lips. “You’re setting a trap.”

“He set a trap for me for eight years,” I replied. “It’s his turn.”

The sting operation was set up in a high-end hotel suite downtown. The FBI had wired the room with hidden cameras and microphones—a poetic irony that wasn't lost on me. I sat on the plush sofa, a wire taped beneath my blouse, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

At exactly 2:00 PM, a knock sounded at the door.

Sullivan entered, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. He scanned the room, his cold eyes missing the microscopic lenses hidden in the vents.

“Ms. Vance. I’m glad you saw reason,” he said, opening the briefcase to pull out a thick stack of legal documents.

“I want to hear Victor’s voice,” I demanded, keeping my hands steady on my lap. “I want him to confirm that once I sign this, he destroys the evidence against my father.”

Sullivan sighed, looking annoyed, but pulled out a phone. He dialed a secure number provided by Victor’s corrupt inside contacts at the jail. The line clicked, and Victor’s voice filled the room.

“Claire,” Victor said, his tone dripping with that familiar, patronizing arrogance. “I knew you’d come crawling back to your senses. You were always too weak to pull the trigger.”

“Do we have a deal, Victor?” I asked, staring directly into one of the hidden cameras. “I recant the abuse, and you bury the files on my father? You stop the extortion?”

“Sign the papers, sweetheart,” Victor chuckled. “And remember who’s really in charge.”

I picked up the pen. I held it over the signature line for a long three seconds.

Then, I dropped it.

“You know, Victor,” I said into the phone. “You once told me nobody believes quiet women.”

Silence on the other end.

“But they do believe the FBI.”

Before Victor could react, the door to the adjoining bedroom burst open. Six armed federal agents swarmed the room. Sullivan went for his gun, but an agent tackled him to the floor before he could draw.

“FBI! Don't move!”

Over the dropped phone, I could hear Victor screaming in a panic before the line abruptly went dead.

I stood up, stepping over the fraudulent contract on the table. The trap had sprung flawlessly.
