Chapter 2 - THE CALL TO THE GENERAL

Vanessa triumphantly raised her golden chalice to her lips, her dark eyes glittering with malicious glee. Adrian stood with his arms crossed, his handsome features warped in absolute smugness. They truly believed that I—a beaten, bleeding woman on the floor of the royal palace—was entirely defeated.

They were gravely mistaken.

My trembling, blood-stained hand slowly reached out. I bypassed the papyrus divorce scroll and aimed directly for the gold-encrusted smartphone lying near the pool of blood. This modern, divine communication device was the sole instrument linking the royal palace directly to my father’s massive legions stationed at the eastern borders.

Seeing my movement, Adrian let out a loud, mocking laugh that echoed off the high-vaulted ceiling.

"What are you going to do? Beg the high priests? Call the palace guards?" he sneered, stepping closer as if to crush my hand under his foot. "No one is coming to save you. The Pharaoh is signing the decree for my new grand title tomorrow morning. Your family's era is over!"

I said nothing. I pressed the call button. The line connected instantly.

I pressed the cold metal of the phone to my ear, letting the blood from my lip smear the glowing screen. Tears welled in my eyes, but they were no longer tears of shame; they were a raging fire capable of burning down the great temple of Karnak.

Using every ounce of strength left in my body, I growled into the phone:

May you like

"Father... ruin his life."

A single sentence, light as a desert breeze, but carrying the weight of a death sentence.
