Chapter 5 - The Illusion Shatters

Daniel was a man built on appearances.

He was the guy who bought drinks for the whole bar, who bragged about his stock portfolio at family barbecues, and who constantly posted photos of "our" perfect life on Facebook.

When the truth started leaking out, he tried to control the narrative.

On Friday night, my phone was blowing up with notifications from friends and distant family members.

Daniel had posted a long, tear-jerking status on Facebook.

“Heartbroken to announce that Claire and I are separating. I gave this marriage my all, but sadly, sometimes money changes people. I’ve been left with nothing but the clothes on my back by a woman who cares more about her bank account than her vows. Please respect my privacy during this devastating time.”

The comments were immediately flooded with sympathy from his frat brothers and extended family, calling me a gold-digger and a monster.

I sat on my sofa, staring at the screen.

For years, I had protected his ego. I had hidden his debts, covered for his mistakes, and smiled in the photos.

Not anymore.

I didn't argue in the comments. I didn't write a long, emotional essay defending myself.

I simply took a picture of the police report outlining the domestic assault, and the hospital photos showing the severe, blistering burns on my face and neck.

I posted them as a reply to his status.

My caption was one sentence long: “Money didn't change me. Boiling coffee thrown at my face did. See you in court, Daniel.”

The internet is a ruthless place, and the fallout was instantaneous.

Within ten minutes, the supportive comments on his post vanished, replaced by shock, horror, and outrage from mutual friends.

His mother called me, weeping hysterically, asking if the photos were real. I told her yes, and hung up.

By midnight, Daniel had deleted the post and deactivated his entire Facebook account.

But the internet never forgets. Someone had already screenshotted the exchange and sent it to his employer.

The next morning, Mr. Sterling called me with an update.

"Just thought you'd like some good news with your morning coffee, Claire," my lawyer chuckled. "Daniel's firm has a strict morality clause. After the domestic abuse allegations went viral among your social circle, his HR department stepped in."

"He was fired?" I asked, feeling a strange sense of vindication.

"Terminated with cause. And without his corporate salary, he has absolutely no way to afford the legal defense he's going to need for the IRS audit. He's bleeding out, Claire. We have him."

I looked out the window at the city skyline.

The man who had told me I had to obey or leave was now jobless, homeless, and facing federal charges.
