Chapter 5 - The Retainer and the Trap

At 8:00 AM on Tuesday morning, I sat in the high-rise conference room of Vance & Sterling Legal Associates in downtown Chicago.

I had deliberately chosen a firm two hours away from our suburban county—outside the jurisdictional influence of Klaus Bennett’s political connections.

Across the glass table sat Evelyn Vance.

Despite sharing a last name with our corrupt fertility doctor, Evelyn had zero relation to him; in fact, she had spent the last decade building a reputation as the most ruthless corporate and matrimonial litigator in the Midwest.

She finished reviewing the printed pages from my flash drive, her sharp blue eyes cold and razor-sharp.

She laid the medical report from Dr. Gregory Vance on top of the offshore bank records.

“This isn't just a high-asset divorce, Mrs. Bennett,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a lethal, measured cadence.

“This is coordinated medical malpractice, criminal conspiracy, aggravated domestic fraud, and attempted interstate adoption trafficking.”

I sat upright, my hands resting calmly on the table.

“Can Julian and his father suppress this if we file locally?”

Evelyn offered a thin, predatory smile that sent a shiver through the room.

“Klaus Bennett owns two municipal judges in your home county, Claire.”

“He does not, however, own the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, who happens to be my former law partner.”

She tapped the Horizon Properties financial audit with her gold pen.

“The moment Klaus moved offshore funds from Liechtenstein through a commercial domestic LLC to pay for an off-the-books surrogate while forging federal adoption documents, he crossed into federal wire fraud and human exploitation statutes.”

“They took this out of family court the second they committed the first felony.”

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for years.

“What about Sophie?” I asked. “Can they take the child from her?”

Evelyn shook her head firmly.

“Sophie is a fully competent adult who was deliberately defrauded with fabricated divorce decrees.”

“I have already dispatched an associate to her motel room to secure her formal affidavit and file an emergency federal protective injunction.”

“By noon today, Julian Bennett will be legally barred from approaching within one thousand feet of her or contacting her through any third party.”

“What about tomorrow night?” I asked, leaning forward.

“Julian expects me at his parents' estate for dinner at seven o'clock.”

“They are planning to spring the adoption on me under the guise of an abandoned child.”

Evelyn leaned back in her leather executive chair, contemplating the chess board before us.

“If we serve them today, they will cancel the dinner, shred physical files, and scramble their offshore assets before federal warrants can be executed.”

“We need them on record confirming their intent.”

“Can you wear an audio wire to that dinner, Claire?”

The question hung in the air, heavy with danger.

If Julian or Klaus discovered a recording device on me in their private home, there was no telling what lengths they would go to protect their empire.

They had already chemically altered my body without my consent.

They were capable of anything.

I looked Evelyn dead in the eye without a single flicker of hesitation.

“I won't just wear an audio wire, Evelyn.”

“I want a high-definition pinhole camera pinned directly to my lapel.”

“I want every smirk, every German insult, and every forged document captured in four-K resolution.”

Evelyn’s smile widened, cold and triumphant.

“I like you, Claire.”

“My technical team will fit you with a commercial-grade encrypted transmitter disguised as a brooch this afternoon.”

“The feed will stream directly to my firm's server and into the monitoring van of the federal task force parked two streets away from the Bennett estate.”

“You will sit at that table, let them present their plan, and prompt them to confirm every detail in their own words.”

“And the moment Helga speaks her famous German sentence?”

I stood up, adjusting my coat with absolute precision.

May you like

“The moment she tells me to raise Sophie’s child, Evelyn...”

“I will answer her in fluent German.”
