Chapter 9 - The Fractured Alliance

Back at the Sterling penthouse, the atmosphere inside the gilded rooms had descended into venomous civil war.

With forty million dollars frozen and the bank accounts inaccessible, Julian’s polished facade had completely disintegrated.

He spent the early hours of the morning tearing through the floorboards of his private closet, searching for emergency cash reserves.

Every knock of the wind against the terrace glass caused him to whirl around with his gun raised, sweating through his silk shirt.

Chloe stood in the doorway of the master bedroom, watching the man she gave up her dignity for unravel before her eyes.

She held a half-packed leather suitcase, her voice cracking as she begged Julian to take the private jet and run to Mexico immediately.

Julian stopped his frantic digging, stood up, and looked at Chloe with a look of pure, unadulterated contempt.

He laughed bitterly, asking her why he would waste a single seat on a private jet for an anchor that would drag him down.

Chloe froze, her hands instinctively moving to protect her unborn child as the cruelty of his words struck her chest.

She asked him what he meant, reminding him that she was carrying his baby and that they had planned this future together.

Julian sneered, stepping toward her until his breath smelled of stale scotch and raw panic against her forehead.

He hissed that he had never loved her for a single second, calling her a second-rate substitute for Valerie’s status and elegance.

He told her that he had only slept with her to secure a biological leverage point against the Sterling family trust in case Valerie proved infertile.

He sneered that Chloe was nothing more than the greedy daughter of a cheap mistress, entirely disposable now that the plan had failed.

Julian revealed that he had already booked a single charter ticket on an offshore transport leaving from Norfolk Executive Airport at midnight.

He had liquid bearer bonds worth five million dollars hidden in a safety deposit box that the authorities couldn't trace.

He planned to board that plane alone, leaving Chloe and her mother behind to face the corporate fraud charges and the police interrogations.

Chloe stood paralyzed in the doorway as Julian pushed past her, slamming the master bedroom door in her face.

The realization that she had destroyed her family, betrayed her sister, and sold her soul for a man who viewed her as garbage shattered her spirit.

Downstairs in the private parlor, Evelyn Vance sat drinking gin straight from the bottle, refusing to look up as Chloe came down the stairs.

When Chloe begged her mother to help her stop Julian, Evelyn coldly told her that in business, the weak are always sacrificed first.

Evelyn blamed Chloe for getting pregnant too early, claiming that the child had made Julian reckless and sloppy with his timeline.

Abandoned by the man she loved and discarded by her own mother, Chloe collapsed onto the hallway carpet, weeping in utter agony.

In that moment of absolute despair, Chloe pulled a cracked burner phone from her pocket and stared at the screen.

She remembered the emergency family contact number that Valerie had forced her to memorize three years ago when she first moved into town.

Valerie had told her back then that no matter what happened in life, family always answered when you called for help.

Chloe’s fingers shook violently as she dialed the eleven digits, praying through her tears that the dead could still answer the phone.

Across town in the drydock bunker, the burner phone on Mason’s console began to vibrate against the metal table.

Mason picked it up, glanced at the caller ID, and handed the receiver to me with a raised eyebrow.

I put the phone to my ear, remaining completely silent as the heavy, ragged breathing of my half-sister filled the speaker.

Chloe’s voice broke into a desperate sob, whispering my name into the darkness of the connection.

She wept that she knew I was alive, and that she knew she deserved to burn in hell for everything she had done to me.

She confessed that Julian had planned to poison me first, and that he was now preparing to flee the country with five million in bearer bonds.

Chloe begged for mercy, not for herself, but for the innocent baby growing inside her womb who had no choice in its parents.

She offered to give me the master decryption keys to Julian’s personal laptop and the security codes to his private charter hangar.

I listened to her cries, my heart torn between the searing pain of her betrayal and the cold demands of our strategy.

I told Chloe that blood did not make us family, and that tears could not wash away the mud of the river she watched me sink into.

However, I added that if she wanted to save her unborn child from growing up behind prison bars, she had to follow my instructions to the letter.

Chloe swore that she would do anything, agreeing to place Julian’s laptop inside the dead-drop locker at the ferry terminal within an hour.

She promised to act as our inside eyes, keeping Julian inside the city until the annual Sterling Gala commenced the following evening.

I hung up the phone without offering forgiveness or comforting words.

Mason looked at me, his jaw set in a grim line, asking if I truly trusted the woman who had smiled while we drowned.

May you like

I told Mason that I did not trust Chloe’s conscience, but I trusted her survival instincts completely.

Julian had turned his own allies into his executioners, and now the stage was set for his final public destruction.
