Chapter 5 - The Downfall of Ambition

Richard Kensington turned to his head of security, a towering man in a dark suit standing nearby.

"Mark," Richard commanded, his voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "Call the board of directors immediately. Tell them Daniel Whitmore is fired from Kensington Enterprises, effective this second. Cancel his stock options, revoke his executive security clearance, and lock his access to all company assets."

Daniel’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "Mr. Kensington! Please! No! I’ve devoted six years of my life to your company! You can’t do this to me over a misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" Eleanor spat, rising to her feet and glaring at Daniel with pure disgust. "You forced your own wife to hide in the dark because you were ashamed of her appearance. You disowned her in front of this entire room to preserve your fragile ego. You are not a leader, Mr. Whitmore. You are a parasite."

"Emily! Emily, baby, please tell them!" Daniel sprinted over to Emily, falling to his knees and grabbing the hem of her dark navy dress, his face twisted in desperate agony. "Tell your father I love you! Tell him how good I’ve been to you! We're married! We're a team! I was just stressed about the promotion, you know that! I didn't mean any of it!"

Emily looked down at the man kneeling at her feet.

For four years, she had believed his words. She had believed she wasn't good enough, wasn't smart enough, wasn't refined enough for his world. She had suffered his cruel jokes, his subtle abuses, and his crushing neglect, thinking that marriage meant enduring the pain.

But looking at him now—groveling on the floor, clutching the very patched dress he had mocked ten minutes ago—she saw him for what he truly was: a hollow, cowardly man driven entirely by greed.

Gently, Emily pulled her dress out of his desperate grip.

"You weren't ashamed of my dress, Daniel," Emily said, her voice clear, calm, and completely devoid of warmth. "You were ashamed of the fact that I didn't fit into your shallow fantasy. But the woman who raised me—Mrs. Rosa Bennett—taught me what true nobility looks like. It isn't found in a Rolex or an Aston Martin. It's found in love, sacrifice, and truth."

She looked into his terrified eyes. "Our marriage is over, Daniel. You will hear from my lawyer by morning."

"No! Emily, please!" Daniel wept, but before he could say another word, two massive security guards grabbed him under his arms, dragging him backward across the polished marble floor as he kicked and screamed like a child. "Emily! You can't do this to me! I'm your husband! EMILY!"

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind Daniel, cutting off his desperate cries forever.
