Chapter 15 - The Road Ahead

Six months later, the autumn chill of the Rhineland had given way to the vibrant, blooming greens of a European spring.

The trauma wards at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center were operating at peak efficiency, and my name had been officially submitted for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, backed by a unanimous commendation from the European Regional Medical Command.

Alexander and I had taken our three-day leave in a secluded wooden chalet nestled deep within the rolling hills of the Black Forest.

There were no security details stationed at the door.

There were no corporate executives begging for favors.

There were no toxic relatives hiding behind polite smiles and kitchen shears.

Just miles of ancient pine trees, crisp mountain air, the sound of a distant stream, and the quiet, unbreakable warmth of a life built on mutual respect, fierce loyalty, and unconditional love.

Standing on the balcony of the chalet in the early morning sunlight, I wore a simple civilian linen shirt and comfortable jeans, sipping a hot cup of black coffee while watching the mist rise off the valley floor.

Footsteps sounded softly behind me on the wooden planks, and a familiar, strong pair of arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm chest.

“What are you thinking about, Colonel?” Alexander whispered into my hair, his breath warm against my neck.

I smiled, leaning back into his embrace and resting my hands over his.

“Not a single thing in Virginia,” I whispered back.

Alexander chuckled, pressing a tender kiss to my cheek.

“Good.”

“Because our flight back to the base is tomorrow, and the head of surgery says you’re scheduled to give the keynote address at the European Trauma Symposium next week.”

I turned around in his arms, looking up into the eyes of the man who had walked into my parents' toxic foyer with three stars on his shoulders and changed my world forever.

“Tell me, General,” I teased lightly, a bright smile playing on my lips.

“Do you think I need to buy a new dress uniform for the symposium?”

Alexander’s eyes danced with amusement as he pulled me a fraction closer, his voice low and rich.

“Wear whatever you want, Emily.”

“As long as you know—no matter what you wear—you are the most formidable commander in any room.”

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him down into a deep, certain kiss.

The past was ashes.

May you like

The uniform was replaced.

And our future was blazing bright, boundless, and completely our own.
