Chapter 7 - The Freefall

The fallout was immediate and devastating.

By the time Daniel and Vivian managed to escape the country club, the video had already gone viral on every social media platform. Rachel had pre-sent the entire evidentiary package to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s office.

The next morning, the Cole family estate was surrounded by federal agents.

I watched from a black SUV parked down the street as Daniel was led out in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled, his head bowed to avoid the flashing lights of the reporters. He looked small. He looked like the thief he had always been.

Vivian was wheeled out shortly after, screaming at the agents, claiming medical distress, her face twisted in ugly, impotent fury.

They were denied bail. The combination of attempted murder, conspiracy, wire fraud, and pension embezzlement made them extreme flight risks. Their assets were frozen immediately, including the offshore accounts we had successfully traced and locked down.

A week later, I sat in the visiting room of the county jail.

Daniel sat behind the plexiglass. The blue prison jumpsuit did not suit him. The confidence that had once defined him was completely gone, replaced by a hollow, desperate look.

“Clara, please,” he begged, his hands pressed against the glass. “You have to drop the charges. Vivian... she forced me. She threatened to cut me off if I didn't go along with it. I loved you, Clara. I still love you.”

I looked at his hands against the glass. I remembered those same hands wiping oil off his Italian shoes while I lay burning on the floor.

“Do you know what the hardest part of being a fraud attorney is, Daniel?” I asked, my voice calm through the intercom.

He shook his head, tears welling in his eyes.

“It’s realizing that the people who lie the most always believe their own lies first,” I said. “You actually believed you were smart. You actually believed I was weak. But the truth is, I was just waiting for you to make a mistake.”

“Clara, please! I’ll give you everything. The house, the money—”

“You don’t have any money, Daniel,” I interrupted gently. “The SEC seized the logistics company this morning. The pension funds are being returned to the workers. The house is being auctioned off. You and your mother are broke. And you are going to prison for a very, very long time.”

I stood up, adjusting the collar of my coat.

“Goodbye, Daniel. Enjoy the soup.”
