Chapter 9 - The Midnight Counter-Strike

Night fell over Elmridge with an oppressive, suffocating stillness.

Inside the private harbor suite provided by Arthur Sterling, the lamps cast a warm, golden glow across the architectural blueprints and legal binders spread across the dining table.

I sat on the sofa, clad in clean, dry clothes, drinking hot peppermint tea while Evelyn Cross monitored the secure surveillance feed of the Elmridge Queen Anne residence.

Arthur Sterling stood by the window, his coat removed, his suspenders straight, his cellular phone pressed to his ear as he coordinated with the local police precinct.

"They are packing," Evelyn observed calmly, pointing toward the high-resolution monitor displaying the exterior of my home.

On the screen, the garage lights of the red-brick house flickered on.

Through the garage windows, we could see Emmett and Lorna frantically throwing hard-shell suitcases into the trunk of Emmett’s silver sedan.

There was no frail invalid being assisted down the back porch steps.

Lorna Vance was carrying two heavy leather weekend bags herself, walking with rapid, energetic strides, barking instructions at her son.

"They realize Marcus turned state’s evidence," Arthur said, hanging up his receiver and stepping toward the monitor.

"They are attempting an emergency extraction."

"Emmett knows his firm will lock his corporate credentials at midnight."

"They intend to take whatever portable jewelry, cash reserves, and personal luxury goods they can carry, drive across state lines to the Sarasota villa, and fight the charges from a non-extradition civil jurisdiction."

I looked at the screen, watching the woman who had pretended she couldn't lift an eight-ounce plastic cup of water effortlessly hoisting a fifty-pound suitcase into the trunk.

The sheer depravity of their performance over the past eight months was captured on high-definition infrared security footage.

Every movement.

Every sprint.

Every furious gesture.

"Let them pack," I said quietly, setting my tea mug onto the table.

"Oh, we intend to, Renata," Arthur smiled thinly.

"Under Commonwealth law, grand larceny becomes an aggravated felony when an actor attempts to transport stolen estate property across state boundaries to evade a court order."

"At seven o'clock this evening, Judge Thornton executed an emergency ex parte freezing injunction."

"Every bank account associated with Emmett Vance, Lorna Vance, Vance Legacy Partners LLC, and Cypress Grove Holdings LLC has been placed into immediate judicial receivership."

"Their credit cards are inactive."

"Their debit cards are worthless plastic."

"Even the corporate gas card in Emmett’s leather wallet will be declined at the first turnpike toll booth."

Just then, my personal phone buzzed on the table.

It was an incoming video call from Emmett.

I looked up at Arthur.

The veteran attorney nodded gently. "Answer it, Renata. Let him show the camera exactly who he is."

I swiped the green icon and set the phone upright against the sugar bowl on the table.

Emmett’s face filled the screen.

He was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car inside the dark garage, sweat pouring down his forehead, his hair wild and disheveled.

"Renata!" he panted, his voice trembling between frantic desperation and bubbling rage.

"You think you're clever bringing Arthur Sterling into our marriage?!"

"You think you can destroy my career and walk away untouched?!"

"Listen to me, you ungrateful little orphan!"

"I spent four years keeping a roof over your head!"

"My mother gave you a purpose when your pathetic architectural career was failing!"

"You owe us everything!"

Lorna leaned into the frame from the passenger seat, her eyes blazing with pure hatred, her sharp nails gripping the leather dashboard.

"You listen to me, you miserable little girl!" Lorna shrieked into the microphone.

"If you don't call off this bulldog attorney of yours in the next thirty minutes, I will tell the entire neighborhood that you beat me!"

"I have bruises on my arms from where you dragged me into the bath!"

"I will file elder abuse charges against you before the midnight magistrate!"

"Let’s see how your precious Clara’s name looks dragged through the mud of the county criminal blotter!"

I didn't blink.

I didn't flinch at her monstrous lies.

I leaned forward, looking directly into the high-resolution camera lens.

"Lorna," I said, my voice smooth and resonant, echoing through their car’s Bluetooth speakers.

"You might want to look up at the garage ceiling."

Lorna froze.

Emmett’s eyes darted upward.

"Three months ago, Emmett insisted on installing high-definition security cameras in the garage, the kitchen, and the downstairs hallways," I said calmly.

"He told me it was to monitor your dementia sundowning so you wouldn't wander into the street."

"What Emmett didn't realize is that the master cloud administrative credentials were registered to my personal email address because I was the one who set up the home Wi-Fi network."

"Every single minute of you lifting those fifty-pound suitcases is being recorded in 4K resolution directly to the District Attorney’s secure server."

"Every single word of your elder abuse extortion threat has just been transcribed by Evelyn Cross, who is sitting right next to me."

Emmett’s jaw dropped in absolute horror.

He looked up at the tiny, blinking blue light of the security dome mounted on the garage rafter above his windshield.

"Renata... wait..." Emmett choked out, his voice cracking into a pathetic, whimpering squeak. "Renata, please... don't do this... We can fix this... We can divide the house fifty-fifty... I will give you whatever you want..."

"You don't have anything left to give, Emmett," I replied softly.

"You are sitting in my driveway."

"In my grandmother’s house."

"And the police cruiser has just turned onto the boulevard."

I tapped the red disconnect button, severing the call forever.

On Evelyn's monitor, two sets of flashing blue and red emergency lights illuminated the wet autumn leaves of the driveway.

The midnight reckoning had arrived.
