Chapter 7 - The Day In Court

Six months later, the trial finally concluded.
The courtroom was heavily air-conditioned, but the tension was suffocating.
Margaret sat at the defense table.
She looked drastically different.
The expensive clothes were replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit.
Her hair was graying and unkempt.
She looked old.
Defeated.
Michael and Emily sat in the front row of the gallery.
Emily sat tall.
Her shoulders were back.
She wore a beautiful blue dress, and a delicate silver watch on her wrist.
Right over the spot where the bruise used to be.
She wasn't afraid anymore.
The judge struck his gavel.
"Margaret Carter," his voice boomed across the room.
"You have been found guilty on all charges."
Margaret stared blankly ahead.
"Your actions were not just illegal; they were morally reprehensible."
"You exploited your own son while he was serving his country."
"You subjected your daughter-in-law to systematic psychological abuse."
The judge adjusted his glasses.
"I sentence you to eight years in federal prison."
"With no possibility of parole for the first five years."
A collective gasp echoed in the courtroom.
Margaret finally reacted.
She slumped forward, burying her face in her hands.
She was sobbing loudly.
She turned around, looking desperately at Michael.
"Michael! Please! Forgive me!"
Michael didn't blink.
He didn't show anger.
He didn't show sadness.
He just showed complete indifference.
He stood up, took Emily's hand, and they walked out of the courtroom.
They didn't look back.
Outside, the sun was shining brightly.
The crisp autumn air felt incredibly refreshing.
Reporters were waiting on the courthouse steps, but Michael ignored them.
He opened the car door for Emily.
As she slid into the seat, she looked up at him and smiled.
It was a genuine, radiant smile.
The kind of smile he had fallen in love with all those years ago.
"How do you feel?" Michael asked, starting the engine.
Emily took a deep breath.
"Free."
She reached over and rested her hand on his leg.
"I feel completely free."
They drove away from the courthouse, leaving the city behind.
They had decided to move out of state.
To a small town near the mountains.
A place where nobody knew their past.
A place where they could just be Michael and Emily.
The legal battle was over.
May you like
Justice had been served.
Now, it was time to live.
