Chapter 7 - The Monster on Screen

The trial lasted two weeks, but it was decided in two minutes.

It was the moment DA Ramirez pressed play on the hidden camera footage in front of the jury.

The courtroom was dead silent as the grainy, black-and-white video played on the large screens.

The jury watched as Evan, perfectly calm, walked into the bedroom. They watched Mara back away, her hands instinctively covering her pregnant belly. They heard his voice, cold and detached, as he berated her for something as trivial as misplacing his watch.

And then, they saw the monster strike.

It wasn't a crime of passion. It wasn't an accident. It was calculated, punishing, and utterly merciless.

Several jurors looked away in tears. The court reporter stopped typing, covering her mouth.

I sat in the gallery, holding Mara’s hand. She trembled violently, but she forced herself to keep her eyes open. She watched her own trauma, no longer a victim, but a survivor witnessing her abuser’s unmasking.

When the video showed Evan walking out of the room, leaving her bleeding on the floor, and Celeste poking her head in only to sigh and close the door, the jury's faces turned to stone.

Vance didn't even bother to cross-examine Mara when she took the stand. There was nothing left to defend.

Before the jury could even deliberate, Evan's facade completely crumbled. In a desperate bid to save himself, he tried to fire Vance in open court, screaming that his mother had told him to do it, that she had always cleaned up his messes.

He threw his own mother under the bus in front of the whole world.

The guilty verdict took the jury less than an hour.

Aggravated assault. Attempted manslaughter.

Celeste was arrested in the hallway right outside the courtroom, handcuffed in front of the flashing cameras for witness tampering and obstruction of justice.

As they led Evan away in orange, the expensive tailored suit stripped away, he looked back at Mara. He expected to see fear.

Instead, Mara stood tall, holding my arm, and didn't even blink as the heavy steel doors of the holding cell slammed shut in his face.
