Chapter 7 - The Secret Vault In The Sacramento Basement

By Thursday afternoon, Marcus Vance’s investigative team had executed a civil search warrant on the primary residential property in Sacramento where Nora and Arthur had lived for thirty years.
Because the house was technically mortgaged under a family trust that Arthur had used fraudulent collateral to secure, the court-appointed receiver had the legal authority to drill open every locked room and desk drawer on the premises.
At two o’clock, my encrypted laptop pinged with a secure file transfer from the private investigators on the ground in northern California.
I connected the laptop to our living room wall monitor so Evelyn and I could review the digital discoveries together in real time.
The video feed showed two private investigators and a court bailiff stepping into the damp, concrete-floored basement of my parents' suburban home.
The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling metal shelving units stacked with dust-covered cardboard boxes.
One of the investigators used a crowbar to pry open a heavy steel filing cabinet tucked behind a rack of old winter coats.
Inside the cabinet were not old tax returns or family photo albums.
There were forty-eight identical black leather journals, each labeled with a year and a specific name in Arthur’s precise, angular handwriting.
The investigator pulled out a volume labeled: Project Extraction — 2018.
He opened the cover to the first page and held it up to the high-definition body camera.
My breath caught in my throat.
It was not a journal of family memories.
It was a comprehensive, handwritten ledger of every single family Arthur had systematically targeted, manipulated, and financially destroyed over the past twenty-five years.
There were detailed notes on wealthy young heiresses who had married into their extended circle, complete with psychological evaluations, lists of their personal insecurities, and step-by-step strategies to isolate them from their friends.
There were records of corporate partners whose businesses Arthur had sabotaged through insider leaks to force them into disadvantageous buyouts.
And right there, underlined in thick red ink on page twelve of the 2023 volume, was a fresh entry titled: The Evelyn Tang Acquisition Strategy.
“My God,” I whispered, staring at the screen as the investigator slowly turned the pages. “They didn't just target you by accident, Evelyn.”
“You were project number fourteen on a twenty-year master list.”
Evelyn stood up from her chair, walked slowly toward the large television screen, and pressed her fingertips against the cold glass where her name was written in my father’s handwriting.
“They looked at my software company sale as a divine intervention for their failing finances,” she said, her voice completely devoid of tremor.
“Arthur needed fourteen million dollars to clear his federal liabilities before his bankruptcy trial next spring.”
“Nora was assigned to break my spirit, isolate me from my professional network, and force me to sign over power of attorney during a vulnerable prenatal state.”
She turned to look at me, her eyes locking onto mine with fierce clarity.
“And Raymond was the legal architect who drafted the backdated trust clauses to ensure the funds could never be recovered once the baby was born.”
She reached out and closed the laptop lid, cutting off the live video feed from the Sacramento basement.
“Julian, your father isn’t just a failed businessman.”
May you like
“He is the head of a predatory financial syndicate that has been operating under the guise of respectable suburban philanthropy for decades.”
“And now that the ledgers are in the hands of the federal receiver, every single victim they ruined over the last twenty-five years is going to step forward.”
